Nigerian lawmakers in moves to investigate tax evasion
LAGOS-The House of Representatives has mandated an Ad hoc committee yet to be constituted to investigate all matters related to tax evasion in the country. It urged the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) to conduct Back Duty Investigation of all companies that had not complied with the relevant tax laws.
The committee is expected to submit its report to the House on a date yet to be announced. This resolution emanated from a motion moved by Rep.Babangida Ibrahim (CPC-Katsina) which was unanimously adopted.
Leading the debate, Ibrahim noted that the FIRS recently stepped up its efforts at investigating tax cases to check activities of evaders. According to him, findings had revealed various discrepancies and manipulations undertaken by some companies. He said that corporate companies operating in Nigeria had undeclared income, withholding, and Value Added Tax (VAT) taxes.
