NCC declares MTN, Glo dominant operators
ABUJA: The Nigerian Communications Commission has named mobile operators MTN Nigeria and Globacom dominant players, following a market analysis conducted by KPMG Professional Services. According to the regulatory agency, measures have been put in place to prevent both companies from exploiting their dominant positions and undermining competition in the Nigerian telecommunications industry. MTN was declared a dominant operator in the mobile voice market and wholesale leased lines and transmission capacity, and Glo was declared dominant in the wholesale leased lines and transmission capacity market.
According to the NCC, although there are several operators in the mobile market, its study shows that the mobile voice market is not effectively competitive. The two dominant operators will be subject to regulations requiring accounting separation, symmetric retail tariffs for on- and off-net traffic and detailed reporting of operations, as requested by the NCC. The regulator also plans to set prices for other mobile operators in the market and introduce a price cap for wholesale leased lines and capacity. The rules take effect 01 May.
