Buhari names Maikanti Baru new GMD NNPC, approves new board
ABUJA-PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has finally named a new Group Managing Director for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.
Former Group Executive Director Exploration and Production Dr. Maikanti Baru was named by the President to take over from Dr. Ibe Emmanuel Kachikwu who has been functioning in dual capacity as both minister of state for Petroleum Resources and GMD of the NNPC. Dr. Kachikwu is however to continue as Minister of state for petroleum resources and Chairman of the newly composed NNPC Board.
The Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media Mr Femi Adesina made this known via his facebook page on Monday and stated that the President has approved the composition of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, as provided for under Section 1(2) of the NNPC Act of 1997, as amended.
The new board is composed of the following Chairman-Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum, Group Managing Director-Dr Maikanti Kacalla Baru, The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance; and The following six persons, Mallam Abba Kyari, Dr Thomas M.A John, Dr Pius O. Akinyelure, Dr Tajuddeen Umar, Mallam Mohammed Lawal, and Mallam Yusuf Lawal.
President Buhari urges the new board to ensure the successful delivery of the mandate of the NNPC, ” and serve the nation by upholding the public trust placed on them in managing this critical national asset.”
It would be recalled that this writer did an article in December, 2015 titled ‘why NNPC needs a new GMD now’ to underscore the multiple functions of Dr. Kachikwu as both Minister and GMD and its effect on the effective and smooth running of the NNPC and the oil sector in general.
