Nigerian President reshuffles NNPC Mngt, sacks GMD

President Goodluck Jonathan, Tuesday, asked the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC Mr. Austen Oniwon to proceed on retirement.
The presidency also appointed Mr. Andrew Yakubu as the new Group Managing Director.
According to a statement from the presidency, the appointments is to further strengthen the ongoing reforms and transformation ofNigeria’s Petroleum sector, and to achieve greater transparency and accountability in government.
The statement further stated, “The incumbent Group Managing Director, Engr. Austen Oniwon, and Mr. Michael Arokodare (outgoing Group Executive Director (Finance and Accounts), Mr. Philip Chukwu, outgoing Group Executive Director (Refineries & Petrochemicals), and Engr. Billy Agha, outgoing Group Executive Director (Engineering & Technology) are to proceed on retirement.
“The re-composition of the executive management team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as follows:
1. Engr. Andrew Yakubu – Group Managing Director
2. Mr. Bernard O.N. Otti – Group Executive Director (Finance and Accounts)
3. Engr. Abiye Membere – Group Executive Director (Exploration and Production)
4. Dr. Peter S. Nmadu – Group Executive Director (Corporate Services)
5. Engr. Anthony Ogbuigwe – Group Executive Director (Refineries & Petrochemicals)
6. Dr. Attahir B. Yusuf – Group Executive Director (Commercial & Investments)
7. Dr. David Ige – Group Executive Director (Gas & Power)
The incoming Group Managing Director, Engr. Andrew Yakubu graduated from theAhmaduBelloUniversity,Zariain 1979 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He joined the NNPC in 1980. Positions he has held in the corporation include Managing Director of the Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company and Group Executive Director (Exploration and Production). Engr. Yakubu is an indigene ofKadunaStateand a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
President Jonathan has also approved the appointment of Engr. Victor Briggs as the new Managing Director of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).

Austin Oniwon who Until this appointment as Group Manager Director in May 2010 was the Group Executive Director, Refining and Petrochemicals (GED, R&P). He is replaced Alhaji Shehu Ladan who is said to have been appointed as the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State following the elevation of the Governor and present Deputy Governor of Kaduna State to the position of Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Governor of Kaduna State respectively.
Mr Austin Oniwon was born on the 1st of April, 1951, in Okene,KogiState, North Central Nigeria. He started his working career with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in 1977 and rose to become Head, Planning of the Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company (WRPC) in 1987.From 1988 to 1991 he was the Technical Assistant to the Group Executive Director (GED), Downstream and later Head, Engineering and Technical Services Department (ETSD) of Kaduna Refining and Petrochemicals Company (KRPC) from 1991-1992. That same year, Mr Austin Oniwon was made Head, New Business Development, Corporate Planning and Development Division, a post he held until his appointment as Head, ETSD at the Port Harcourt Refinery from 1993-1999.
From 1999-2000 Mr Austin Oniwon held forte as General Manager, Information System, Engineering and Technology Directorate before moving on to function as Senior Technical Assistant to the GMD and GM, Information Systems Department at the GMD’s office. Months later he was made the Managing Director of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the NNPC before moving on to the Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited as MD between 2003- 2009.
Mr Austin Oniwon is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (FNSChE), he is married and blessed with children.
