Bomb attack looms at Lagos, Nigerian cargo shed
By Oyise Oghene
Due to the nature of porosity at the Cargo Village of the International wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos, the General Secretary of the Nigerian Aviation Professional Association (NAPA), Comrade Abdulrasaq Saidu yesterday said that if care was not taken that there might be a bomb attack by the dreaded Islamic sect. Boko Haram at the airport.
Speaking against the move to allow the Association of the Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANCLA) and other agents to return back to the cargo village after they were been asked to evacuate the area by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Comrade Saidu said”the authority that supposed to sustain the action of FAAN because of one interest or the other has ridiculed FAAN’s action that has been taken by the agency and it is very unfortunate and that is why we are asking whether we have a government in this country”
He however stressed that with the way things were going on at the cargo shed that he was sure that there would be an attack in the nearest future if adequate care was not taken.
“When you are talking of safety ans security at the airport. Cargo is inclusive and there is no sacre cow, Nigeria has been practising order from above and this must stop”
“Otherwise, I am sorry in this era of bomb here and there, if care is not taken, we may likely have something like this in the future in the cargo session because if the sanity and security is not there, the action taken by FAAN is not sustained because of the powers from above then we are doomed in this country” Comrade Saidu said.
He further pointed out that the cargo agents should be allowed to do their job in line with the layed down standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) stressing that to forestall the act of terrorism in the country security must be beefed up at the airport including the cargo village.
He said”look at what has happened in the cargo area in recent times when the customs detected ammunitions, can you believe that you can get such things there, so that area should be thoroughly sanitize and whosoever does not have any business at that part of the airport should not be allowed in for security purpose”
According to him,”the practise outside the country is that you get the papers for your goods, you go to the customs, clear yourself and go and clear your goods and you leave. If the clearing agents have staffs, those staffs must stay very far outside the airport and not to be touting at the airport”
