New naira: CBN Insists On Jan 31
President Muhammadu Buhari has emphasized that the plan to revamp the naira currency will not change and that the deadline for discontinuing the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes will not be extended. He made this statement on Saturday
Despite calls from various groups, including state governors, the Nigerian Bar Association, the Arewa Consultative Forum, and bank customers, for a reconsideration of the deadline for the discontinuation of the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes, the Central Bank of Nigeria has stated that the deadline will not be extended.
This aligns with the position of President Muhammadu Buhari, who has previously stated that there will be no changes to the plan to revamp the naira currency.
President Muhammadu Buhari emphasized that the planned revamp of the naira currency is not aimed at punishing innocent citizens, but rather at addressing corruption and the financing of terrorism by targeting individuals hoarding illicit funds.
He further reassured Nigerians that the government will take steps to minimize any disruptions to businesses and supply chains as a result of the planned revamp of the naira currency.
He also addressed reports of long queue for individuals depositing old notes and obtaining new ones. This statement was released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Saturday.
The statement was titled, ‘Government will eliminate squeeze, chaos in currency swap, President Buhari assures’.
The statement read in part, “While taking note that the poorest section of society is facing hardship as they often keep hard cash at home for various expenses, President Buhari gave strong assurances that the government would not leave them to their own fate.
“He reiterated that a number of initiatives by the central bank and all commercial banks are underway to speed up distribution of the new notes and do all that is necessary to forestall cash squeeze and chaos.”
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reaffirmed that the deadline for the discontinuation of the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes remains January 31, 2023, citing a video of CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele from a recent Monetary Policy Committee meeting.
In the video, Emefiele had said after the MPC meeting, “Unfortunately, I don’t have good news for those who feel we should shift the deadline; my apologies.
“The reason is because, just like the President has said on more than two occasions and even to some people privately, 100 days is more than enough for anybody who has the old currency to deposit it in the banks. And we took every measure to ensure that all the banks were and are still open to accept deposits.”

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
