Supreme Court Temporarily Halts Ban On Old Naira Notes
The Federal Government’s plan to ban the use of old naira notes from February 10, 2023 has been temporarily suspended by the Supreme Court.
A seven-member panel, led by Justice John Okoro, issued the ruling in response to an exparte application brought by the northern states of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara.
According to news men the deadline was met with opposition from Governors Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara, as well as a threat from 14 political parties to boycott the February 25 election if the CBN extended the time limit.
In addition, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has restrained President Muhammadu Buhari, the CBN, its Governor Godwin Emefiele, and 27 commercial banks from altering or interfering with the currency swap terminal date.
The High Court’s restraining order was handed down on Monday by Justice E. Enenche, in response to an application by four political parties.
Recall that BIZTELLERS had reported the three states Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara, sought an interim injunction from the Supreme Court to prevent the federal government and the CBN from ending the use of old 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes by February 10, 2023. The states requested for the order to prevent this until their motion for interlocutory injunction is heard and determined.
The three governors who sought the Supreme Court’s intervention aimed to halt the full implementation of the CBN’s naira redesign policy.
support of their application, the applicants’ counsel, Mr. A. I. Mustapha, argued that the court should grant the application in the interest of justice and for the benefit of Nigerians.
He argued that the policy had led to an “excruciating situation that is almost leading to anarchy in the land”.
After thorough review of the motion exparte in the application, Justice Okoro granted the prayer.
Ruling on the motion, Justice Okoro held that “An order of Interim Injunction restraining the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame with which the now older version of the 200, 500 and 1,000 denomination of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction”.
Justice Enenche adjourned the hearing of the main suit to February 15, 2023.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
