FG, CBN To Act On New Naira Pending Supreme Court Ruling – Presidency
According to a recent statement by the Presidency, neither the Federal Government nor the Central Bank of Nigeria has made a decision regarding the continued use of old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes as legal tender.
This decision has been put on hold as the case is still pending before the Supreme Court, which is scheduled to hear it on Wednesday.
Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed that the FG will wait until after the Supreme Court ruling before making its position known on the new naira policy. It is expected that the outcome of the case will clarify the legality of the continued use of these old banknotes.
In response to newsmen on Tuesday, He said “Following series of enquiries, we wish to state that it is not true that the FG or the CBN has taken a pre-emptive action on the legality of currency as a legal tender in view of the pendency of the case before the Supreme Court.
“We wish to state that it is not true that the Federal Government or the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN have taken a preemptive action on the legality of currency as a legal tender in view of the pendency of the case before the Supreme Court.
“The position of the government and the CBN will be made known upon the determination of the suit coming up tomorrow.”
The Presidency’s response comes approximately one week after the Supreme Court suspended the Central Bank of Nigeria’s February 10 deadline to halt the use of old naira notes.
Recall that BIZTELLERS had reported that the Supreme Court issued a ruling which temporarily halted the deadline, allowing citizens to continue using the old N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes.
CBN had ordered citizens to exchange these old banknotes for a redesigned version of the same currencies.
However, the Supreme Court, responding to an ex parte application filed by the governments of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara, stopped the CBN from effecting its ban on the old notes pending the hearing and determination of the case on Wednesday, February 15.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
