Jigawa Announces Acceptance Of Old N1000 And N500 Notes, Warns Against Rejection
Despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s announcement on Thursday morning that the old N500 and N1000 notes are no longer legal tender, the Jigawa State Government has advised citizens and other individuals in the state to continue using the currencies as lawful means of payment and business transactions.
Recall that BIZTELLERS had reported on the broadcast made by the President on the issue of the naira crisis which was aired on Thursday, President Buhari declared that the old ₦500 and ₦1000 notes were no longer legal tender in Nigeria. He directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to release old N200 notes as legal tender for the next 60 days, while those with 500 and 1000 naira notes were instructed to deposit them at the Central Bank or other designated points.
The jigawa state government cited the ongoing Supreme Court case, which has not yet been conclusively decided, as the basis for its decision.
Mr. Bala Ibrahim, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports and Culture, announced the state government’s stance on Thursday evening.
The statement reads in part; “The Jigawa State Government wishes to inform members of the Public that, it has come to its notice some individuals and corporate bodies are rejecting the now-old N200, N500 and N1000 notes. The Jigawa State Government is concerned about the conduct of such individuals and corporate bodies.
“As a law-abiding Government, there are suits by various State Governments of which Jigawa State is among before the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
“The court has issued an order restraining the Federal Government of Nigeria, either by itself or acting through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and/or commercial banks, ministries, parastatals, organisations or through any person or persons (natural and artificial) howsoever, from suspending or determining or ending on 10 February, 2023 the time frame within which the now older versions of the 200, 500 and 1000 denominations of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
“For clarity, the section provides, “The decisions of the Supreme Court shall be enforced in any part of the Federation by all authorities and persons, and by courts with subordinate jurisdiction to that of the Supreme Court”.
People are advised to report any traders or business organisation that refuses to accept the now-old N200, N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender in Jigawa State to the nearest appropriate authorities.” He added.

An elated Musa made the disclosure in a statement on his verified handle on micro-blogging site, X on Thursday.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
