LP Candidate Defeats Enugu Gov In Senatorial Race

The candidate for the Labour Party (LP), Okechukwu Ezea, has defeated Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State in the Enugu North Senatorial District election held on Saturday, February 25th.

Despite being the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate and concluding his second term as governor, Mr. Ugwuanyi has lost his bid for the senatorial seat.

The Returning Officer for the election, Chukwuemeka Ubaka, announced the result at the collation centre of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nsukka Local Government Area headquarters on Monday at about 5: 20 a.m.

Mr Ezea, the LP candidate, polled a total of 104,492 votes to defeat Mr Ugwuanyi of the PDP, who came second with 46,948 votes.

The All Progressives Congress candidate for the district, Ejike Eze, garnered 6,816 votes to come a distant third.

Mr Ubaka, a professor, said Mr Ezea was declared the winner in the exercise because he “justified all the requirements of the law” having scored the highest number of votes in the election.

Earlier, there was mild drama at the INEC collation centre in the district, when Mr Ubaka, the returning officer, said he would not collate the senatorial results unless he was given the district’s authentic forms for results and declaration.

Some LP members had accused the returning officer of colluding with an unnamed opposition candidate to overturn the result against the eventual winner.

The results of the exercise from the six local government areas that make up the district had put Mr Ezea in front, after reportedly winning in nearly all the council areas.

The six council areas that make up the district include Nsukka, Igbo-Eze South, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Etiti, Uzo-Uwani and Udenu, where Mr Ugwuanyi hails from.

The defeat of Mr Ugwuanyi marked the first time an opposition political party would unseat a candidate of the ruling PDP in the state.

The PDP had never lost any election in the state since the return of democracy in 1999.

Chukwuka Utazi, the incumbent senator representing the district, had stepped down for Mr Ugwuanyi, ahead of the PDP primary election for the district in May last year.

Mr. Ugwunanyi, one of the PDP governors in the G5 group, is against their party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. After serving two terms as the governor of the state, he will leave office on May 29th of this year.

Observers attribute the LP’s historic electoral victories in the state to the “Peter Obi effect.” Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate, has been garnering increasing support throughout the South-east and some areas of the South-south.

He previously chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which overhauled Nigeria’s tax system, introducing zero income tax for Nigerians earning N800,000 or less and exemptions for small businesses with turnovers below N50 million.

During his Senate screening, Oyedele described his appointment as “a call to serve at a critical time when Nigeria faces significant fiscal challenges and remarkable opportunities.”

He replaces Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning.

Oyedele also spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, held executive programs at top global institutions including the London School of Economics and Harvard Kennedy School, and currently serves as a professor at Babcock University.

JUST IN: Panic on Abuja–Kaduna Rail as Train Derails, Passengers Injured

Published

on

Passengers were thrown into panic on Monday after a train operating along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor derailed, leaving several passengers injured and disrupting services on the busy route.

The train, which was travelling from Kaduna to Abuja, reportedly failed to reach its destination as scheduled after the incident occurred along the rail line linking both cities.

According to passengers on board, the incident happened suddenly, sending shock through the coaches as the train came to an abrupt halt.

Some passengers said they heard a loud bang before the train jolted violently, throwing several occupants off their seats.

Eyewitnesses said the sudden impact caused confusion inside the train compartments, with some passengers sustaining cuts and bruises after hitting seats and metal fittings.

Initial reports suggested that the Abuja-bound train might have collided with another train along the corridor, forcing rail operations to pause temporarily while authorities assessed the situation.

A source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the incident but declined to give full details, noting that he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.

One of the passengers, Sada Malumfashi, shared his experience on social media shortly after leaving the train.

He described the moment as frightening, stating that the loud sound and sudden stop caused many passengers to be flung from their seats.

He said the train remained stationary for about 30 minutes before the journey resumed slowly toward Kubwa, located on the outskirts of Abuja.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed the development and said an official statement would be issued.

Authorities are yet to disclose the exact cause of the derailment or the full extent of injuries as investigations continue.
