Gospel Singer Sinach Faces N5bn Lawsuit Over ‘Way Maker’
Renowned gospel artist Sinach has been hit with a N5 billion lawsuit by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye, over alleged copyright infringement involving her widely celebrated 2016 song, Way Maker.
Maye, in a lawsuit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos under case number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, is seeking a declaration of co-ownership of the song.
He claims to have been a contributor to its creation and is demanding N5 billion in general damages for what he describes as a cumulative infringement of his rights.
In her defense, Sinach has categorically denied the allegations, asserting that she is the sole author of Way Maker. She further stated that her global recognition in the gospel music industry was already well-established before the release of the song.
The case, which commenced on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, has been adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025, for further hearings.
This development has sparked discussions within the music community, as fans and industry stakeholders await the court’s decision on the contentious copyright claim.
