NQP will enhance Nigeria’s reputation – Olusegun Aganga

ABUJA – The minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Olusegun Aganga said that the national quality policy will enhance the reputation of the country.

The minister who was represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Gaba, the president of NASME, National agency for small and medium enterprises made this statement during the second meeting of The National steering committee, NSC for the Nigeria national quality policy held at Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

Dr. Aganga said this quality policy which will enhance Nigeria’s reputation as a provider of quality products and services in the global market will also give credence to the commitment of the World Trade organisation, WTO by the signing of the agreement on Trade Facilitation which was signed at the 9th Ministerial Conference in Bali, Indonesia in December, 2013.

He also said with NQP, a sky rocketed increase is anticipated from the country’s GDP at 510million dollars in 2013 to 558.45million by 2018, a 10 percent growth with the first five years implementation period.

The minister added that the previous increase in the services sectors from 26 percent to 51 percent show the tremendous contributions of the service sectors economy.

Joseph Odumodu, Director General/Chief Executive of SON who was the secretary at the meeting said 500 million dollars can be saved over a period of 5 years in implementing this policy in Nigeria and emphasized on the loses made from exporting without such policy in place.

He further stated that NSC was inaugurated in January 27and 8 committees were set up from the take off of the implementation process of this police which he promised will not just be a government policy where every decision will be made by the government; that it is a public/private sector system where Nigerians have a part to contribute to this policy.

Mr Odumodu also said the absence of National Quality policy is part of the reason substandard products are rampant in Nigeria and we embrace this substandard products because we less informed about the dangers of substandard products.

Gas Explosion in Katsina Filling Station Damages Six Vehicles

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.

The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.

He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.

The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”

State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.

This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
