The Federal Government has declared Monday and Tuesday, December 27 and 28, 2021 and Monday, 3rd January 2022 as public holidays in commemoration of the Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year Day celebrations respectively.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the declaration in a statement on Wednesday, on behalf of the Federal Government.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, who signed the statement, said the Minister felicitated with Christians and all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on this year’s Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to the statement, Aregbesola enjoined Christians to uphold the doctrines of Christ, including but not limited to faith, hope and love.

He said, “We must emulate the life of Jesus Christ in His practice and teachings on humility, service, compassion, patience, peace and righteousness, that His birth signifies.

“This will be the best way to portray Christ and celebrate his birth.”
Aregbesola identified peace and security as two critical conditions for economic development and prosperity.

He called on Christians and Nigerians, generally, to make the best use of this festive period to pray for the total eradication of insecurity bedeviling the country.

The Minister observed that this Yuletide called for Spartan discipline in order to prevent the spread of the vices in the country.

“Moderately celebrate the festival without large groupings and observe all the protocols stipulated by medical authorities. Take it as a point of personal responsibility to prevent the spread of the virus,” the Minister added.

Simon Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian descent and a controversial figure in the Biafran separatist movement, has dismissed his self-styled title of “Prime Minister of Biafra” as inconsequential.

Speaking during legal proceedings at the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, Ekpa stated, “I am just a content creator; the issue of Prime Minister of Biafra is not serious.”

Ekpa’s statement comes in the wake of his arrest by Finnish authorities on charges related to incitement of terrorism.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has accused Ekpa of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent.

The arrest stems from an incident in Lahti on August 23, 2021, and officials are also seeking the detention of four other suspects linked to the case.

“The detention demands are related to a preliminary investigation in which a Finnish citizen of Nigerian descent, born in the 1980s, is suspected of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” the NBI said in a statement.

Ekpa, who has used his social media platforms to advocate for Biafran independence, has been a divisive figure in Nigeria’s southeast region.

His rhetoric and actions, including calls for economic shutdowns through “sit-at-home” orders, have been linked to widespread unrest and disruptions in the region.

The panel is tasked with creating a detailed account of the state’s assets and liabilities to ensure transparency and accountability.

The committee will be chaired by Ernest Umakhihe, with Anslem Ojezua as Deputy Chairman and Frank Edebor as Secretary. Other members include Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, Patrick Idiake, Rasaq Bello-Osagie, Fredrick Unopah, Abdallah Eugenia, Patrick Obahiagbon, Kenny Okojie, Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Abass Braimoh.

Explaining the rationale behind the committee, Mr. Itua stated, “Despite repeated calls for a more holistic database of the assets and liabilities of the previous administration, the Godwin Obaseki-led government presented a scanty and limited report.”

He added that the initiative reflects the governor’s commitment to his campaign promises.

“In line with the governor’s campaign promise to ensure probity, accountability, and transparency in government, and to deepen the governance process, a committee made up of respected sons and daughters from Edo State has to be constituted,” the statement noted.

The committee’s work is expected to pave the way for a more accountable and developmental governance structure in Edo State.
