Published

on

On Friday night, a group of alleged hoodlums launched an attack on several ad-hoc staff members who were stationed at Tudunwada Primary School, located in the city of Gombe. The individuals targeted were reportedly working for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mahid Abubakar, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Gombe State Command, has confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES, but has not shared any further information regarding the attack.

As per reports, the assailants caused severe harm to three of the INEC officials, who sustained injuries from machete cuts and other forms of physical assault.

The injured officials have been admitted to a hospital in the vicinity, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

According to one of the ad-hoc staff members, who preferred to remain anonymous, the attackers not only caused physical harm but also stole valuables including at least three mobile phones, backpacks, and power banks from the officials.

The staff member also reported that several individuals sustained injuries while attempting to escape from the attackers and seek refuge.

“The police and the school guard were nowhere to be found. They went with phones belonging to my colleagues. I sustained injuries while trying to escape,” he added.

The same ad-hoc staff member expressed disappointment with the slow response of the security operatives, stating that it was not until the hoodlums had departed from the scene of the attack at approximately 11 p.m. that the police arrived to restore order.

“An attack that took place at about 11 p.m., not until they (hoodlums) left that police came to ensure order.” he said.

It remains uncertain how this incident will impact the upcoming elections in the area. However, INEC had previously reassured Nigerians that it was fully prepared to manage any emergency situations that may arise.
