Katsina Police Apprehend 15 Youths For Suspected Electoral Malpractice

Published

on

Fifteen young men have been taken into custody by the Katsina police on suspicion of possessing laptops believed to have been intended for election-related activities.

According to an anonymous police source who spoke to newsmen, the individuals were apprehended with laptops and are suspected of possessing “tracking devices” that may have been earmarked for use in a situation room.

On Friday evening, it was reported that the young men were taken into custody at various locations in the Katsina metropolis following the receipt of an intelligence report, the source said.

Gambo Isa, the spokesperson for the police command, has confirmed to newsmen that  “some youths” suspected of being involved in hacking activities were arrested, but provided no additional information at this time.

“You see, contrary to what some people are telling you people (journalists), those arrested were not with ballot papers as being rumoured,” Mr Isa said.

“We had an intelligence report on suspected hackers and our men decided to act on it. We’ve some people in our custody and investigation has started. We’ve every reason to investigate them but it’s only when we have the outcome of the investigation that I’ll update you,” he said.

Nevertheless, an anonymous source of PREMIUM TIMES offered a few additional pieces of information, but requested not to be identified.

“We believe they’re working for a political party because all their systems (computer laptops) have the logo of the party on the screens. They are at the CID right now,” he said, declining to mention the party.

Despite the fact that the police investigation is still ongoing, it should be noted that all major political parties in Nigeria have recruited young, tech-savvy individuals to observe and monitor the elections and their outcomes online.

For this election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made significant strides in incorporating technology, such as the real-time publication of result sheets from polling units on its IREV portal.

As a result, political parties, media organizations, and other interested parties have hired personnel who are knowledgeable in technology to monitor these online portals and other relevant online information.

It is presently unclear whether the 15 young men arrested by the Katsina police were employed by the political party that recruited them for the aforementioned technological monitoring tasks.

Fascinating to see America’s democracy empower its people and uphold the nation’s founding principles. Congratulations to the 47th POTUS-elect”

Donald Trump won the 2024 U.S. presidential election in a stunning comeback, securing more than 270 Electoral College votes, with a victory in the key swing state of Wisconsin.

Despite legal troubles and controversies, including multiple criminal indictments, Trump prevailed by capitalising on voter concerns about the economy, immigration, and rising prices.

His campaign focused on addressing issues like inflation and crime, while presenting Kamala Harris as unable to manage these problems.

Trump’s victory was driven by strong support from rural, white, non-college-educated voters, Hispanics, and lower-income households. The win also saw Republicans gain a majority in the Senate, though control of the House remains uncertain.
