Chief Babalola Urges Tinubu To Halt Severance Package For Ex Presidents, Governors, Others
Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), the Founder of Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s government to implement comprehensive restructuring through constitutional amendments to address evident political and social imbalances within the system.
Babalola emphasized the necessity of discontinuing the exorbitant allowances granted to former presidents, vice presidents, governors, deputy governors, federal and state lawmakers, as well as other political appointees.
Additionally, he proposed that public office holders should be prohibited from maintaining foreign accounts.
He stated, “Beginning from the 10th National Assembly, federal and state lawmakers should receive only sitting allowances and not salaries.
“What is being paid to the political office holders as severance packages while leaving office is outrageous and deplorable. It has to stop. All such perks should stop if the country is to make progress.”
Chief Babalola further made an appeal to the Federal Government, urging them to prioritize the security of lives and property in order to attract global investors to the country.
In addition, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has advised governments at all levels to actively engage in Public-Private Partnership initiatives.
He believes that such collaborations serve as powerful catalysts for economic development and the overall prosperity of the nation.

Ekpa’s statement comes in the wake of his arrest by Finnish authorities on charges related to incitement of terrorism.
The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has accused Ekpa of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent.
The arrest stems from an incident in Lahti on August 23, 2021, and officials are also seeking the detention of four other suspects linked to the case.
“The detention demands are related to a preliminary investigation in which a Finnish citizen of Nigerian descent, born in the 1980s, is suspected of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” the NBI said in a statement.
Ekpa, who has used his social media platforms to advocate for Biafran independence, has been a divisive figure in Nigeria’s southeast region.
His rhetoric and actions, including calls for economic shutdowns through “sit-at-home” orders, have been linked to widespread unrest and disruptions in the region.

The panel is tasked with creating a detailed account of the state’s assets and liabilities to ensure transparency and accountability.
The committee will be chaired by Ernest Umakhihe, with Anslem Ojezua as Deputy Chairman and Frank Edebor as Secretary. Other members include Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, Patrick Idiake, Rasaq Bello-Osagie, Fredrick Unopah, Abdallah Eugenia, Patrick Obahiagbon, Kenny Okojie, Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Abass Braimoh.
Explaining the rationale behind the committee, Mr. Itua stated, “Despite repeated calls for a more holistic database of the assets and liabilities of the previous administration, the Godwin Obaseki-led government presented a scanty and limited report.”
He added that the initiative reflects the governor’s commitment to his campaign promises.
“In line with the governor’s campaign promise to ensure probity, accountability, and transparency in government, and to deepen the governance process, a committee made up of respected sons and daughters from Edo State has to be constituted,” the statement noted.
The committee’s work is expected to pave the way for a more accountable and developmental governance structure in Edo State.
