A 19-year-old Austrian national with ties to the Islamic State (IS) has been arrested for allegedly planning a suicide attack at a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, authorities announced on Thursday.

The suspect reportedly intended to use explosives and knives in an attack designed to cause mass casualties.

Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria’s domestic intelligence agency (DSN), confirmed the arrest during a press briefing, stating that the suspect was apprehended on Wednesday morning in Ternitz, Lower Austria.

As a result of the security threat, all three Taylor Swift concerts scheduled for this week in Vienna have been canceled.

The shows, part of Swift’s Eras tour, were set to take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Ernst Happel Stadium.

“Due to confirmation by government officials of a planned terrorist attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three planned shows for everyone’s safety,” the concert organizers said in a statement.

They also assured fans that all tickets would be automatically refunded within the next 10 working days.

A second suspect was arrested in Vienna in the afternoon, though authorities have not disclosed any further details about this individual.

“According to the current stage of the investigation, both suspects were radicalized via the internet,” said Franz Ruf, Austria’s General Director for Public Security.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer acknowledged in a post on X that the concert cancellations would be a “bitter disappointment for all fans,” but underscored the gravity of the situation.

“Thanks to the intensive cooperation between our police, security agencies, and foreign services, the threat was identified early, neutralized, and a tragedy was averted,” Nehammer stated.

Vienna’s police chief, Gerhard Pürstl, revealed that the concerts were expected to draw 65,000 attendees daily, with an additional 22,000 fans anticipated outside the venue.

“The suspect’s goal was to kill himself and a large number of people during the concert, either today or tomorrow,” Pürstl explained.

The group mentioned, “IS,” refers to the Islamic State, also known as ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) or ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant).

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Bello has since left the lodge, accompanied by the current Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo. Following the incident, normalcy appears to have returned to the vicinity.

This latest attempt to apprehend Bello follows his long-standing status on the EFCC’s wanted list for allegedly laundering N80.2 billion. After months of evading capture, a statement from the Director of Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, indicated that the former governor had agreed to attend an EFCC invitation after consulting with his family, legal advisors, and political allies.

However, the EFCC responded by clarifying that Bello is not in their custody and remains a wanted individual due to the serious money laundering charges against him, as reiterated by spokesman Dele Oyewale.
