Wike Launches Investigation Into UBEB Activities
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), expressing dissatisfaction with the agency’s management.
The announcement was made during a meeting with Dr. Hamid Boboyi, the Executive Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), on Thursday in Abuja.

Wike voiced concerns over the lack of transparency and detailed briefings on UBEB’s operations.
He stressed the importance of improving the conditions of schools across the FCT, stating that dilapidated school infrastructure is incompatible with the government’s goal of providing quality education.
“You cannot talk about quality education when the schools are in bad shape,” the minister remarked.
In addition to school renovations, Wike underscored the need for hiring qualified teachers and ensuring that school environments are conducive to learning.
He called for renewed efforts to address the rising number of out-of-school children, many of whom can be seen on the streets across the country.
He urged UBEC to ramp up initiatives aimed at enrolling these children in school.
During the meeting, the minister also tackled the issue of land allocation for educational purposes, indicating that the process would now come with stricter conditions.
Wike stated that land would only be allocated to institutions that demonstrate financial capacity for immediate development and provide a timeline for completion.
Institutions that fail to meet these conditions risk having their allocations revoked and reassigned to more capable bodies.
The decision follows several instances where institutions have held land for 15-20 years without any development, leading to the construction of illegal shanties that harbor criminal activity or the selling of land meant for educational projects.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
