In a heartfelt moment at the 2024 Celebrities Entertainment Awards in Canada, popular Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing publicly apologised to the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners of Nigeria (TAMPAN) after a three-year suspension.

The actress, who was previously suspended over a high-profile dispute surrounding the Baba Ijesha child abuse case, expressed deep remorse for her past actions and asked TAMPAN to forgive her.

Blessing’s suspension, which dates back to 2021, followed a heated online exchange with actor Lege Maimi regarding the controversial case of fellow actor Baba Ijesha.

The incident created significant tension within the Nigerian film industry, as Blessing and her colleague Iyabo Ojo led a campaign demanding justice for the alleged abuse.

This campaign sparked backlash from prominent TAMPAN members, including actors Yomi Fabiyi and Lege Maimi. In response to the unrest, veteran actor Jide Kosoko called for a boycott, barring directors from working with Blessing and Ojo.

During her emotional apology at the awards ceremony, Blessing openly addressed TAMPAN members, saying, “I am so sorry for all that I did. I’m begging from the bottom of my heart. I miss the industry. You all made me who I am today. I’m being celebrated all over the world because of you. Please, I’m sorry.” The emotional appeal quickly went viral on social media, with many fans and colleagues commending her willingness to seek reconciliation.

Following Blessing’s public apology, TAMPAN president Mr Latin expressed appreciation for her sincere apology, signaling a possible path to mending relations. Additionally, actor Odunlade Adekola applauded her for showing humility and taking responsibility.

This recent turn of events has reignited discussions about unity and accountability within Nollywood, particularly within the Yoruba film community.

Baba Ijesha, at the center of the original controversy, was sentenced to prison in July 2022 by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo at the Ikeja Special Offences Court, after over a year of trial.

Nkechi Blessing’s apology marks a significant chapter in her career, as she seeks a fresh start and hopes to rejoin TAMPAN after years of estrangement.
