Agric Ministry dismisses N18.9bn ‘bush clearing’ claims

The committee’s Chair insists to see the land cleared…..

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has claimed to have spent a staggering N18.9 billion  to clear bushes and prepare land during the COVID-19 shutdown.

In a hearing to investigate the ministry’s spending, the House of Representatives learned that the Nigerian agricultural ministry spent N18.9 billion on bush clearing during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The ministry made this disclosure in response to an investigation into how it spent N18.9 billion, according to Wole Oke, chairman of the House of Representatives committee on public accounts.

The House committee is looking into a N18.9 billion deal with the agriculture ministry for clearing brush, preparing the ground, and repairing soil plant laboratories during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

“During the lockdown of the country as a result of COVID-19, some companies took contracts worth about N18 billion for bush clearing from the federal ministry of agriculture for land preparation, rehabilitation of soil plant lab and others. We cannot shave their heads in their absence,” Mr Oke said.

He further disclosed that the committee has invited the project’s implementation companies to testify.

“We have invited them to come and give us their own side by responding to the issues and show us the places they are supposed to have cleared. They have to take us to the land they cleared,” the committee’s chair said.

He added, “We have invited the ministry of agriculture, and they have made (a) submission. But some of our members whose constituencies these projects were supposed to be domiciled doubted the existence of these projects, and for (a) fair hearing, we have invited the companies that got the contract for them to come and tell this committee where and when the jobs were executed.”

According to Mr. Oke, the committee will carefully look at all pertinent information pertaining to the deal.

Borgu: ‘We Must Never Normalise the Killing of Nigerians’ — Peter Obi

Published

on

Peter Obi has condemned the reported killing of some Nigerians abducted in Borgu, Niger State, saying the country must never normalise the killing of its citizens.

Obi made this known in a statement released via X on Wednesday, where he described the reports emerging from Borgu as increasingly difficult to comprehend and deeply painful.

He recalled that on August 27, he had expressed his anguish over the reported abduction of about 600 Nigerians, including women, children and elderly people, alongside the killing of others.

According to him, his anguish has deepened following continuing reports of the gruesome killing of some of those abducted, while many others remain unaccounted for.

Obi also referred to another disturbing incident in which a bandit group reportedly beheaded a Nigerian and sent his severed head to a community leader over a ₦50 million levy.

“If the reported killing was intended to increase pressure on the community and extract more money for those still being held, then we must recognise the terrible reality before us: human life is being deliberately turned into a bargaining instrument,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor said one person being killed to terrorise an entire community while others are kept alive as hostages for more ransom amounts to the systematic devaluation of human life.

“These are not statistics. They are Nigerians. They are mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters and elderly people,” Obi said.

He questioned how long the country would continue to accept the kidnapping of hundreds of citizens, killings, criminal levies, displacement and ransom payments as unavoidable features of Nigerian life.

Obi said insecurity also affects families, farms, businesses, education and public confidence in government.

He called for intelligence-led operations, stronger community security, rapid response, better coordination and equipment for security forces, effective border protection and sustained action against criminal networks.

“The primary responsibility of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” he said.

“While politicians prepare for elections, Nigerians are asking for something more fundamental: the right to live.”

Obi urged the government to match prayers with action, insisting that no criminal group should determine who lives or dies anywhere in Nigeria.

“Every Nigerian life matters. Every victim deserves justice. Every community deserves protection. Nigeria must restore security, justice, and the dignity of human life,” he added
