Head coach of Chelsea F.C., Liam Rosenior, has called for a lifetime ban for any player, coach, or manager found guilty of racism in football, following allegations during a UEFA Champions League encounter earlier this week.
UEFA has launched an investigation into claims that Vinícius Júnior was racially abused by Gianluca Prestianni during Real Madrid CF’s 1-0 victory over S.L. Benfica in Lisbon on Tuesday.
Reacting to the development, Rosenior said while he could not directly comment on the specifics of the ongoing probe, his stance on racism in football remains firm.

“If any player, any coach, or any manager is found guilty of racism, they shouldn’t be in the game. It’s as simple as that,” he said.
The Chelsea boss described racism as unacceptable in any part of society, stressing that football must lead the way in enforcing zero tolerance.
“It’s upsetting. Any form of racism in society, not just football, is unacceptable. When you see a player as upset as Vinícius was, normally they’re upset for a reason,” Rosenior added.
The controversy deepened after Benfica manager José Mourinho accused Vinícius of inciting the crowd with his goal celebration. However, Rosenior defended the Brazilian winger and shared his personal experience with racial abuse.
“I have been racially abused myself. When you are judged for something you should be proud of, it is the worst feeling you can ever imagine,” he stated.
Benfica have rejected the allegation against Prestianni, describing it as a “defamation campaign.” The Portuguese club also released video footage on social media, arguing that the distance between the players made it impossible for the alleged remarks to have been heard.
Rosenior further called for greater accountability in football, saying the sport reflects broader societal divisions.
“There needs to be more accountability. People are prejudged based on their background, religion, nationality, or the colour of their skin. Everybody should be judged equally based on the content of their character,” he said.
UEFA is expected to conclude its investigation in the coming weeks, with disciplinary action likely if the allegations are substantiated.

Emergency services also confirmed that another youth was injured in the collapse, while several others sustained injuries as rescue teams rushed to the scene.
Local media reported that the fountain gave way under the weight of dozens of fans who had climbed onto the structure to celebrate Spain’s World Cup triumph.
