‘Copying My Style’, Flavour, Kcee Clash Over Music Styles

Published

on

Nigerian music scene just got more heated as highlife singer Flavour, born Chinedu Okoli, and Afropop artist Kcee, whose real name is Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo, engage in an online clash over musical styles.

The dispute began on October 29, 2024, when Flavour seemingly accused Kcee of imitating his highlife music style on his X (formerly Twitter) account, subtly referring to him as “copy copy akaria.”

Although Flavour didn’t directly mention Kcee’s name, fans quickly connected the dots, speculating that the comment was aimed at Kcee due to his recent transition from Afropop to highlife and Igbo cultural music.

Kcee, who has enjoyed success with hit singles and a strong presence in the Afropop world, responded firmly to the shade.

In his response, Kcee emphasized that he has been part of the Nigerian music industry for years, even before Flavour’s entrance.

Kcee urged Flavour to “pick [his] battles carefully,” insisting that highlife and Igbo music are cultural treasures that don’t belong to one individual.

Kcee added, “You’re not a Custodian. I’ve been in this game before you…My music celebrates our heritage, and I won’t apologize.”

The feud stirred up conversations online, with fans taking sides on who represents Igbo cultural music better. Both artists have made significant contributions to Nigerian highlife, a genre deeply rooted in Igbo traditions, though each with their distinct style.

While Flavour is known for his soulful highlife tunes like “Nwa Baby” and “Ada Ada,” Kcee has recently incorporated cultural elements into his music, sparking debate among fans.

Kcee continued his response by stating, “People recognize authenticity. I’ll continue celebrating our culture unapologetically. Spend your energy on success, not diminishing mine.”

His statement reflects his commitment to promoting Igbo culture without concerns over criticism.

As the exchange garners more attention, industry watchers and fans alike are closely observing to see if the two musicians will reconcile or if this rivalry will intensify further.
