Two friends, Noah Tovohome and Rajay Zannu, were remanded by a Yaba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly conspiring and murdering their friend, Segun Zusu, reportedly over 36 bags of rice.

They faced charges of murder before Magistrate Linda Balogun on Tuesday.

Allegedly, the duo, along with a boat driver transporting Zusu’s goods, planned his demise while en route from Seme.

Intercepting the boat at Novo River in Seme around 2 am, they assaulted Zusu with a plank, throwing him into the river.

The accused then sold the rice in Badagry for approximately N1.4m to a businesswoman and divided the proceeds among themselves.

The police prosecutor, Chekwube Okeh, informed the court that the defendants committed the crime on November 12, 2023.

Okeh stated that their actions violate Section 222 and are punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The charges read in part, “That you, Noah Tovohome, 27, Rajay Zannu, 38 and others at large, on November 12, 2023, around 2 am, at Novo River, Seme, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one 26-year-old Segun Zusu, by hitting a plank on his head and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.”

However, the pleas of the defendants were not taken.

Okeh urged the court to detain them at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre until the Directorate of Public Prosecutions offers legal advice.

Magistrate Balogun granted this request, adjourning the case until January 22, 2024, for the DPP’s guidance.
