Croatian Tennis Legend Nikola Pilic, Djokovic’s Coach Dies At 87
Croatian tennis great Nikola “Niki” Pilic, celebrated for his achievements as both a player and a coach, has died at the age of 87.
The Croatian Tennis Association confirmed his death on Tuesday, describing him as “one of the greatest players and coaches Croatian tennis has ever had.”
Pilic passed away on Monday in the coastal town of Opatija.

A dominant force in Yugoslav tennis during the 1960s, Pilic won five national singles championships (1962, 1963, 1964, 1966, and 1967), seven doubles titles, and one mixed doubles title.
His biggest career highlight came in 1973, when he reached the French Open final, losing to Ilie Nastase. He also clinched the 1970 US Open doubles crown alongside Pierre Barthes.
Beyond his own successes, Pilic was widely respected for his work as a coach. He guided stars like Boris Becker, Michael Stich, and Goran Ivanisevic.
More importantly, he played a pivotal role in shaping the career of Novak Djokovic. In 1999, Djokovic’s first coach, Jelena Gencic, sent the young Serbian to Pilic’s academy in Munich.
There, under his guidance, Djokovic honed the skills that would later make him a 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic would often refer to him as his “tennis dad.”
The Croatian Tennis Association highlighted his unique Davis Cup record: “Nikola Niki Pilic will be remembered as the only captain ever to lead three different nations to Davis Cup titles.”
He steered Germany to victories in 1988, 1989, and 1993, led Croatia to its first title in 2005, and guided Serbia to glory in 2010.
In recognition of his contributions, Pilic received the association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
The Serbian government later awarded him the Gold Medal of Merit in 2020.
Nikola Pilic leaves behind a legacy not only of titles and victories, but of mentorship that shaped the path of some of the greatest names in modern tennis.
