Debt Profile: Osun Flaunts DMO’s Data Validating Prudence

Published

on

The Osun State Government is upbeat about the data in the report of the Debt Management Office (DMO) claiming that it validates the financial prudence of the Governor Ademola Adeleke administration on the state’s debt management.

According to the Spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Olawale Rasheed, data released by the DMO has vindicated the Adeleke led administration on Osun’s debt profile.

He added that contrary to the falsehood published by certain online news platforms, perceived to be amplified by the opposition, the Osun state’s external debt according to the DMO has reduced by 15% while Domestic Debt reduced by 42%.

Rasheed’s views were contained in a statement on Sunday, in which he noted that the Domestic debt of Osun was ₦148.37 billion as at December 2022 but reduced to ₦86.06 billion as at June 2024 while Foreign Debt as at December 2022 was $91.78 million but reduced to $78.17 million as at June 2024.

He said, “The truth remains that Osun State Debt profile has actually reduced under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke in the last two years. Data doesn’t lie and cannot be hidden.

“The Domestic debt of Osun was ₦148.37 billion as at December 2022 but it has now reduced to ₦86.06 billion as at June 2024. In the same manner Foreign Debt as at December 2022 was $91.78 million but it has now reduced to $78.17 million as at June 2024.

“What that means is that the Domestic debt of Osun reduced by 42% and also the External debt reduced by 15% within two years of our administration.

“What this also mean in terms of figures is that Governor Adeleke has paid back ₦62.31billion as domestic debt and paid off $13.61million in foreign debt, this is the burden the APC led past administration imposed on the people of the state. If this administration didn’t inherit those debt, these said amounts would have been better used for the good people of Osun state.

“The online medium failed to do due diligence and published APC’s fabricated fake news. The figures published by the DMO has now exposed the falsehood and fake news.

“The fact remains that Governor Adeleke has not taken any loan. There is transparency and accountability in this government. We are concerned about the welfare of the people and we will keep doing that.”

Borgu: ‘We Must Never Normalise the Killing of Nigerians’ — Peter Obi

Published

Peter Obi has condemned the reported killing of some Nigerians abducted in Borgu, Niger State, saying the country must never normalise the killing of its citizens.

Obi made this known in a statement released via X on Wednesday, where he described the reports emerging from Borgu as increasingly difficult to comprehend and deeply painful.

He recalled that on August 27, he had expressed his anguish over the reported abduction of about 600 Nigerians, including women, children and elderly people, alongside the killing of others.

According to him, his anguish has deepened following continuing reports of the gruesome killing of some of those abducted, while many others remain unaccounted for.

Obi also referred to another disturbing incident in which a bandit group reportedly beheaded a Nigerian and sent his severed head to a community leader over a ₦50 million levy.

“If the reported killing was intended to increase pressure on the community and extract more money for those still being held, then we must recognise the terrible reality before us: human life is being deliberately turned into a bargaining instrument,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor said one person being killed to terrorise an entire community while others are kept alive as hostages for more ransom amounts to the systematic devaluation of human life.

“These are not statistics. They are Nigerians. They are mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters and elderly people,” Obi said.

He questioned how long the country would continue to accept the kidnapping of hundreds of citizens, killings, criminal levies, displacement and ransom payments as unavoidable features of Nigerian life.

Obi said insecurity also affects families, farms, businesses, education and public confidence in government.

He called for intelligence-led operations, stronger community security, rapid response, better coordination and equipment for security forces, effective border protection and sustained action against criminal networks.

“The primary responsibility of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” he said.

“While politicians prepare for elections, Nigerians are asking for something more fundamental: the right to live.”

Obi urged the government to match prayers with action, insisting that no criminal group should determine who lives or dies anywhere in Nigeria.

“Every Nigerian life matters. Every victim deserves justice. Every community deserves protection. Nigeria must restore security, justice, and the dignity of human life,” he added
