Published

on

On Friday, in a viral video, a man identified as Frederick Nwajagu, said to be the ‘Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, can be seen and heard threatening to invite members of the proscribed Indigenous People of ?Biafra (IPOB) group to Lagos to secure the properties of Igbo people in the state.

The statement which was widely reported in the media led to the arrest of Nwajagu Saturday morning and  confirmed by the Police spokesperson in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin via his verified twitter handle where he stated that ” yeas he has been arrested this morning. He is not in our custody. He is with DSS”.

However, there has been controversies on whether the man was misidentified and misrepresented in media reports. In this quick fact check, Bizteller audits whether or not he was properly identified and represented.

CLAIM: FREDERICK NWAGAJU IS THE EZE NDIGBO OF AJAO ESTATE

FACT:

A deeper dive into the claim by Bizteller reveals that while there may be an Eze Ndigbo of Oshodi-Isolo in the area, there is no report anywhere of the existence of an Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate.

According to further research, there is no Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate. Instead, the only monarch in the area is Eze Ndigbo of Oshodi-Isolo.

A google search of the keywords ‘Eze Ndigbo of Oshodi-Isolo’ brings up a 5th of March 2023 publication by Vanguard where the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP was endorsed by the igbo community and  one Arinze Jude Maureen was named as the  Eze ndigbo of Oshodi-Isolo.

A further search revealed that the Igbo speaking Community chapter was inaugurated in December 2020 as reported by the Independent Newspaper on the 7th of December 2020.

An archived report of the 22nd of March 2015 from the Daily Independent, found on AllAfrica.com named Fred Nwajagu as the current Eze Igbo of Ajao Estate. The report stated that Nwajagu called on the Igbo community to invest back home following rising tensions as the 2015 general election approached.

VERDICT:

While there exists an Eze Ndigbo of Oshodi-Isolo, the office is not occupied by Frederick Nwagaju, however, there are reports that establish that Frederick Nwagaju is the Eze Igbo of Ajao Estate and the office of Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate does not exist.

In light of the above, the claim that Frederick Nwagaju is the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate is false.

Ghana To Grant Visa-Free Entry To All African Nationals

Published

on

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has approved a new policy allowing visa-free entry to Ghana for all African nationals, fulfilling a promise he made earlier this year.

The initiative is expected to be implemented before the end of his term on January 6, 2025.

With this move, Ghana will join Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin as one of the few African nations offering unrestricted visa-free access to all African passport holders.

The policy is seen as a significant step toward promoting free movement across the continent, enhancing trade, and deepening economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

President Akufo-Addo announced the policy during his keynote address at the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) held in Accra.

Speaking under the theme “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” he highlighted the challenges Africans face when traveling within the continent.

“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he said, emphasizing the barriers to intra-African mobility.

He described the visa-free policy as a solution to these challenges and a critical step toward achieving the goals of the AfCFTA.

“The free movement of people is essential for stimulating intra-African trade and fostering collaboration across borders,” Akufo-Addo added, noting that the policy aligns with Ghana’s broader vision of promoting economic growth through integration.

The visa-free initiative is expected to enhance Ghana’s standing in the region, making it easier for African nationals to travel, trade, and collaborate.

By eliminating visa requirements, Ghana aims to position itself as a leader in continental integration, creating opportunities for deeper economic ties with other African nations.

The policy also underscores Ghana’s commitment to the AfCFTA, which seeks to establish a unified market for goods and services across Africa.

Officials believe this move will attract businesses and encourage cross-border trade, ultimately boosting the continent’s economy.

The Ghanaian government has begun taking steps to implement the policy, with full rollout expected before the end of Akufo-Addo’s presidency.

Officials are updating immigration procedures to accommodate the new framework and ensure a smooth transition.

President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the initiative during his address.

“We are taking concrete steps to ensure that this policy becomes a reality this year,” he stated, signaling that the groundwork for implementation is already underway.
