Faroukgate: Dangote Files Corruption Petition Against Ex-NMDPRA Boss

Published

In a major move highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), has filed a formal petition against Farouk Ahmed, former Managing Director of the Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The petition, submitted through Dangote’s lead counsel, Dr. O.J. Onoja S.A.N, accuses Ahmed of abuse of office and corrupt enrichment, urging the EFCC to investigate and prosecute if found guilty.

This action comes after Dangote strategically withdrew a similar complaint from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to accelerate the prosecution process.

According to the petition, Ahmed’s financial conduct has raised serious concerns.

Dangote alleged that four of Ahmed’s children attended elite secondary schools in Switzerland, costing approximately $5 million in total, with an additional $2 million spent on tertiary education, including Faisal Farouk’s $210,000 Harvard MBA program.

Dangote questioned the source of these funds, especially given the financial struggles of families in Ahmed’s home state of Sokoto.

Dr. Onoja emphasized the importance of prompt action, stating, “The commission’s firm resolve in handling this matter with dispatch is not only imperative and expedient but will also serve as a deterrent to other public officers with such corrupt tendencies.”

The petition underscores Dangote’s commitment to transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, calling for a thorough investigation to restore public confidence in regulatory institutions.
