FG Lauds Savannah Energy’s Investment In Nigeria

Published

on

The Federal Government has praised Savannah Energy, the British independent energy company focused around the delivery of Projects that Matter, for its substantial investment in Nigeria’s energy sector to date, saying that it appreciates what the company is doing, and encourages Savannah to sustain it.

The Honourable Minister of State, Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon Ekperikpe Ekpo, made the commendation during a recent visit to the Uquo gas Central Processing Facility in Akwa Ibom State, owned by Accugas Limited, a subsidiary of Savannah.

He noted that Savannah’s substantial investment to date has helped in boosting domestic gas supply in the country, where Savannah now supplies gas enabling approximately 20% of Nigeria’s thermal power generation capacity.

On the importance of gas to the Nigerian economy, the Honourable Minister stated that His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu is intent on developing the gas sector to drive the Nigerian economy.

He said, “The President is very intentional and strategic about developing the gas sector to drive the economy of this nation. We know that if the economy of Nigeria is driven by gas, it will make things easier and that is the target of the ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative. Our target is to make sure that by 2030, the Nigerian economy will be driven by gas.”

The Managing Director of Savannah Energy, Nigeria, Pade Durotoye, who accompanied the Honourable Minister on the Uquo visit, explained that the company, through Accugas Limited, has invested over US$1.6 billion in gas processing and transportation infrastructure to support the domestic market since 2014. Durotoye said, “Accugas is also investing an additional US$45m in a new compression system at the Uquo facility that will allow the company to continue to provide reliable gas supplies to customers for years to come. The system comprises two parallel trains with a capacity of 160 MMscfpd each and is designed to increase the gas export pressure. The project is expected to be completed and operational later this year.”

Durotoye added that Savannah strongly supports the Federal Government’s adoption of natural gas as a transition fuel in Nigeria’s net-zero pathway, particularly for power generation, adding that this is why Accugas has invested in building a nameplate 200 MMscfpd gas processing facility, supported by a ~260km gas pipeline network solely for the domestic market.

Durotoye stated that all the company’s gas is consumed domestically, with 80% being sold to thermal power generation companies, and the remainder to a range of large industrial customers, such as cement producers, where, for example, Accugas enables about 10% of the country’s cement production.

Non-Oil Sector Fuels Nigeria’s Q3 2024 GDP Growth, Says CBN

Published

on

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a significant growth in the country’s economy, with a 3.46% increase in gross domestic product (GDP) in the third quarter of 2024.

This marks the third consecutive quarter of expansion, up from 3.19% in Q2 2024 and 2.54% in Q3 2023.

According to the newly published Q3 economic report, Nigeria’s GDP output rose to ₦20.115 trillion, reflecting a notable improvement from ₦18.285 trillion in the previous quarter.

The CBN attributed this growth primarily to the performance of the non-oil sector, which grew by 3.37% compared to 2.80% in Q2 2024.

The report highlighted transportation, crop production, and other sub-sectors such as financial & insurance services, information & communication, trade, and real estate as major contributors to the expansion.

The non-oil sector accounted for 3.18 percentage points of the total growth rate.

“The expansion of the non-oil sector was driven by the performance of the financial & insurance, information & communication, crop production, trade, transportation & storage, and real estate sub-sectors,” the report stated.

Despite the economic growth, challenges persist. Inflation, particularly in food prices, remains a significant concern, standing at 39.93% as of November 2024.

Rising food and energy costs have also impacted transportation expenses, with intercity bus fares increasing by 20.23% year-on-year to ₦7,117.17 in July 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Furthermore, the cost of petroleum, now exceeding ₦1,000 per litre, has driven up logistics and transportation expenses, adding pressure to households and businesses alike.

The CBN acknowledged these challenges, noting that the growth was achieved despite headwinds such as high inflation and rising operational costs.

Enhanced security measures in the Niger Delta have boosted domestic crude oil production, while restrictive monetary policies have helped moderate inflation in some areas.

“The growth recorded in the country is a result of continued efforts to improve the business environment, streamline cumbersome business processes, and deepen the quality of business infrastructure,” the CBN noted.

However, the report comes amid concerns over businesses exiting Nigeria due to persistent economic challenges.

According to him, the sponsorship of the competition is in line with the Board’s mandate, which is capacity-building and local content development, and that the NCDMB understood “the need to inculcate Local Content consciousness among undergraduates in our higher institutions, to make them understand that Local Content is an economic imperative for sustainable development of our local economy, creation of job opportunities and national security.”

The NCDMB boss expressed the hope that the programme would continue to generate interest and awareness about the critical importance of the Nigerian Content law and philosophy in the oil and gas sector as a national economic agenda for job creation, poverty reduction, industrial development and inclusive economic growth.

He reiterated the Board’s commitment to capacity development of Nigerians and development of opportunities for local communities as demonstrated through the Board’s recently launched “Back-to-the-Creeks Initiative.”
