FIFA 2026: Celebration As Jordan Qualifies For First-Ever World Cup

Published

on

Jubilation swept across Jordan on Thursday night as the national football team secured a historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the country’s first-ever appearance at the global tournament.

The Nashama, as the team is fondly known, booked their ticket to the prestigious event with a commanding 3-0 victory over Oman in the penultimate round of Asian qualifiers.

The result, combined with South Korea’s 2-0 win over Iraq, sealed Jordan’s passage to the World Cup set to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Striker Ali Olwin was the star of the night, netting a memorable hat-trick that ensured Jordan’s name would be etched into football history.

As news of the victory spread, scenes of wild celebration erupted across the capital, Amman.

Motorcades of cheering fans flooded the streets, waving national flags, honking horns, and singing patriotic songs.

A breathtaking drone light show lit up the Amman night sky with messages of unity and pride, including “We are all with you!” and “It’s getting closer, heroes.”

The historic moment resonated even beyond Jordan’s borders. King Abdullah II, who watched the match from the Jordanian embassy in London, was seen donning the national team jersey. In a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), the monarch congratulated the players and fans alike.

“This historic qualification is well-deserved by our team, which includes stars and cadres of whom we are proud,” the King wrote. “Special thanks go to our loyal fans who have been our support and encouragement.”

The achievement coincided with celebrations for Eid al-Adha, adding a layer of national joy. “Today the joy is two-fold,” said Sohad Idrissi, a 48-year-old housewife. “There is the joy of Eid al-Adha, and the joy of Nashama qualifying.”

For many Jordanians, the moment was deeply emotional. “Our team put on a beautiful performance, and they truly deserved to qualify,” said Fadi Qalanzi, a 21-year-old university student.

Osama al-Shreeda, a 60-year-old retired civil servant who has followed Jordanian football since 1978, described it as “a dream come true.”

“This is not just an achievement for Jordan; it is a proud moment for the entire Arab world,” he added.

In the match, O’Reilly delivered another impressive performance, playing with composure and confidence beyond his years.

The youngster also provided an assist for Erling Haaland, helping City secure a crucial win at a key stage of the season.

“O’Reilly deserves the Young Player of the Season. What a season he has had,” Guardiola said. “I don’t know who will win the overall Player of the Season, but for the young category, it has to be Nico.”

The statement has since gained wide attention, especially after being highlighted by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on social media.

O’Reilly’s emergence has been one of the bright spots in Manchester City’s campaign, with the midfielder earning praise for his versatility, maturity on the ball, and ability to step up in high-pressure games despite his young age.

As the season enters its final stretch, Guardiola’s strong endorsement is expected to boost O’Reilly’s profile in the race for individual honours.
