How Lagos Police Brutalized, Extorted Me – Actress Laide Bakare Alleges

Actress Laide Bakare

Renowned Nollywood actress, Laide Bakare has publicly accused the Nigerian Police of brutality following an incident on the Ikorodu Expressway.

In a viral Instagram post on Sunday, Bakare recounted her harrowing experience, which she claimed occurred on Saturday.

Bakare, a prominent figure in the Yoruba film industry, alleged that police officers forcefully drove her car away with her minor daughter inside. “For the first time, I experienced the brutal way Nigerians are being treated along that axis,” she wrote. “I cannot imagine how someone with a brain and sanity will drive someone’s car away with a minor in it.”

She further accused the police of targeting affluent individuals and vulnerable people to exploit and rob, alleging that they demanded her ATM card to withdraw N70,000. “A lot is happening in this country that needs to be attended to. My daughter was left terrified because of the incident,” Bakare added.

In response, the Lagos State police command, through its spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin, refuted Bakare’s claims. In a post on X, Hundeyin stated that Bakare was stopped for violating traffic laws by driving in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane. According to him, Bakare created a scene and refused to remain in her vehicle while it was being taken to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) office.

“You were stopped for contravening traffic laws by driving on the BRT lane. You chose to create a scene. You chose to remain out of your vehicle when it was being taken to the LAMATA office,” Hundeyin wrote. He clarified that the N70,000 paid by Bakare was a fine for her offence, paid into government coffers, and asserted that no physical harm was inflicted upon her. “You left with the receipt and your vehicle,” he concluded.

The actress’s allegations and the police’s rebuttal have sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.
