JUST IN: Bandits Invade Zamfara Communities, Kidnap Over 100

Zamfara State

Armed bandits have invaded the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, kidnapping over 100 people, mostly women and children.

The sad incident transpired on Friday with the bandits reported to have raided four villages of Mutumji, Sabongari Mahuta, Kwanar Dutsi and Unguwar Kawo, all under the Maru Local Government Area.

It was gathered that communities were alleged to have failed to pay levies imposed on them by the bandits.

Reliable sources from Mutumji disclosed that the bandits overran the community at dawn on Friday, after prayers and drove fear into hearts of the people by shooting sporadically, which compelled residents to scamper for safety.

It was also gathered that a bandits’ kingpin operating in the area, Damina, had imposed N110 million naira “harvesting levy” on the communities, with a two-week ultimatum for compliance.

Specifically, a N50m levy was imposed on Mutumji, N30m on Kwanar Dutsi, N20m on Sabongari Mahuta and N10m on Unguwar Kawo, according to sources.

Another source from the area revealed that the communities had started gathering the money when the terrorists invaded the community on Friday evening.

Official reactions from Zamfara State Government and the Zamfara State Police Command were still being awaited as at press time.
