N4bn Fraud: EFCC Drags Ex-Gov Aliyu, Tanko To Appeal Court
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken a significant step by approaching the Court of Appeal to challenge the no-case ruling granted on December 7, 2023, to former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu and ex-PDP chairman Tanko Beji.
This ruling pertains to their alleged involvement in a N4 billion fraud case.
EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
A fresh development unfolds as the commission files a seven-count charge against Tanko Beji, Babangida Aliyu, and former Commissioner for Environment, Umar Mohammed Nasko, accusing them of conspiracy, abetment, and criminal breach of trust.
These charges were presented before Justice Aliyu Mayaki, who has since retired from the bench.
According to the statement: “The matter was later reassigned to Justice Abdullahi Mukailu and the EFCC called 11 witnesses, tendered over 400 exhibits and closed its case.
“However, the three defendants made a no-case submission before the court and His Lordship on December 7, 2023, granted the prayers in favour of Aliyu and Beji and directed Nasko to open his defence.”
The EFCC, in disagreement with the court’s acceptance of Aliyu and Beji’s no-case submission, filed a Notice of Appeal on January 10, 2024.
The commission firmly maintains its belief that a prima facie case has been established against them.
Expressing optimism, the EFCC spokesperson noted that they anticipate the Court of Appeal will ensure justice is served in addressing the appeal.
He said “For the EFCC, the road has not closed. The Commission is proceeding in its appeal against Aliyu and Beji at the Court of Appeal with all its evidence against them.
“The Commission will continue to discharge its duties in line with its mandate of tackling all forms of economic and financial crimes, without fear or favour.” he added

Shell Identifies Keys to Nigeria’s Energy Future
To secure a bright energy for her teeming population, Nigeria must sustain the momentum of reform, accelerate investment, and deepen partnerships.
This view was expressed by Managing Director, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company of Nigeria Limited (SNEPCo) Ronald Adams in Lagos at the weekend.
Delivering a keynote address at the Africa Energy Conference (AEC) of the Lagos Business School (LBS), Adams called for regulatory certainty through efficient execution of reforms, sustained investment appeal to enable projects to move more swiftly from opportunity to production and partnership by operators, regulators, NNPC Limited and communities to unlock the full value of Nigeria’s resources.
Adams cited Nigeria’s huge oil and gas resources as an advantage but pointed out: “Resources alone do not guarantee prosperity. Prosperity comes when resources are matched with investment, technology, sound policy and disciplined execution. Success will be determined not by the size of our resources, but by our ability to convert them into investment and economic growth.”
Adams pledged the support of Shell towards a bright energy future of Nigerians. He said: “For more than six decades, Shell has been part of Nigeria’s energy journey. Together with our partners, we have helped develop major energy infrastructure, supported Nigerian businesses, invested in talent, and contributed to economic development. Bonga remains a powerful example of what technology, partnership and Nigerian capability can achieve in deepwater operations. Today, that story continues through Bonga North.”

Our task is to sustain the momentum and translate reform into projects, projects into growth, and growth into shared prosperity.”
The conference, the 4th in the series had at its theme; “Securing Nigeria’s Energy Future: Policy Reform, Capital Mobilisation, and Pathways to a Sustainable Power and Energy Market” and was attended by top government officials, industry captains, energy professionals, and students.
