NAFA Granted International Federation of American Football & Flag Football Associate Membership

Published

on

The Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) has announced its approval as an Associate Member of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

This marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s sporting history, as she becomes the fourth country in Africa to be granted Associate member status within the International Federation. The other three being Cameroon, Kenya and Egypt.

This recognition comes on the heels of an extraordinary year for American football in Nigeria. At the first-ever IFAF Africa Flag Football Continental Championships, both the men’s and women’s national teams achieved historic success, winning gold and securing their place as Africa’s representatives at the upcoming 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany.

These victories underscore Nigeria’s emergence as a continental powerhouse and reflect the dedication of athletes, coaches, and the broader football community.

The NAFA’s commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment has been central to its mission. This year, the NAFA provided young Nigerian girls with the tools, training, and confidence to lead both on and off the field. Through partnerships with organizations such as BROWNS NIGERIA and the BEMORE Empowered Foundation, initiatives like the Gridiron Gems and the BEMORE Summer Bootcamp have expanded grassroots engagement and opened new doors for girls in sport and leadership.

It was gathered that the NAFA and its partners are committed to reaching 150,000 girls across Nigeria by 2030, further cementing the federation’s role in advancing gender inclusion and opportunity.

The international recognition by IFAF also reflects the momentum generated by the recently concluded Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL) and the Aketi Bowl—the largest American football gathering in Africa engaging over 4000 students across the country. These events have showcased the depth of talent and passion for the sport among Nigerian youth, providing a strong foundation for future growth and international success.

2025 also saw the reactivation of Tackle Football in the country ensuring that NAFA will continue to meet all necessary requirements for Associate membership with its eyes set on broader continental participation in major tackle related events.

An elated NAFA President, Babajide Akeredolu, said, “This is a proud moment for Nigeria and for everyone who has worked tirelessly to grow American football in our country. Our achievements at the continental championships and the success of our grassroots programs demonstrate the power of sport to unite, inspire, and empower. As we look ahead to representing Africa on the world stage, we remain committed to expanding opportunities for all, especially young women and girls, and to building a legacy of excellence for future generations.”
