NCC Shuts Down Popular Streaming Site MovieBox.ng

In a renewed effort to combat the surge of digital piracy, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has suspended MovieBox.ng, a website infamous for offering unauthorized access to movies, music, and live sports broadcasts.

According to a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, the suspension took effect on July 20, 2025.

The action was carried out in partnership with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), the body responsible for managing Nigeria’s .ng internet domain.

Confirming the development, NCC’s Director-General, Dr. John Asein, revealed that the move is part of an intensified campaign against digital piracy and has been widely applauded by stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative industry.

“They use multiple mirror domains to access and promote pirated content, with domain histories linked to known piracy operations,” Asein said.

He explained that MovieBox.ng and its affiliated platforms operated in a coordinated manner to evade regulatory efforts by frequently switching between cloned domains.

Dr. Asein praised NiRA for responding quickly and urged other players in the digital space including service providers and internet intermediaries to adhere to takedown protocols as outlined in the Copyright Act of 2022.

“We are working actively to disable other mirror sites associated with MovieBox.ng,” he added.

The Commission further advised Nigerians to avoid patronizing illegal streaming websites, warning that such platforms not only infringe on copyright laws but also expose users to cybersecurity threats such as malware infections, identity theft, and online fraud.

This domain suspension forms part of the NCC’s broader initiative known as the “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP)” campaign, which was launched earlier this year to intensify the fight against internet-based intellectual property theft.
