Newcastle Secure First Win Of The Season Against Wolves

Published

on

Newcastle United finally broke their early-season struggles by edging past Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday, securing their first victory of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

The decisive moment arrived in the 29th minute when German international Nick Woltemade rose to head in a perfectly timed cross from Jacob Murphy, giving the Magpies a lead they managed to protect despite persistent Wolves attacks.

The goal highlighted Woltemade’s immediate impact at the club, having joined Newcastle in a record £65 million transfer.

The German striker filled the gap left by Alexander Isak, who missed the opening weeks and recently completed a £125 million move to Liverpool.

The victory brings much-needed relief for Newcastle and manager Eddie Howe, who commented on the importance of gaining early momentum:

“It’s a crucial win for us, especially after the difficult start. Nick’s goal was exactly what we needed to get back on track.”

Meanwhile, other Premier League results added intrigue at the top of the table:

Arsenal soared to first place with a 3-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest in Ange Postecoglou’s managerial debut. Martin Zubimendi, the £60 million signing from Real Sociedad, opened the scoring with a spectacular volley on 32 minutes.

Viktor Gyokeres doubled the lead from Eberechi Eze’s assist early in the second half, and Zubimendi completed the rout with a second goal. The win was achieved without key players William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, and much of the game without Martin Ødegaard or Declan Rice.

Bournemouth climbed to third following a 2-1 victory over Brighton, with Antoine Semenyo converting a penalty after Kaoru Mitoma had equalized for the visitors. Alex Scott had earlier put Bournemouth ahead.

Aston Villa drew 0-0 at Everton, keeping Jack Grealish quiet while failing to score themselves.

Leeds United suffered a late 1-0 defeat at Fulham due to a 94th-minute own goal by Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Sunderland maintained an unbeaten start with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace.

Looking ahead, Tottenham aim to match Arsenal’s nine points in their clash with West Ham, while Chelsea, with seven points from three matches, have a chance to top the table when they visit Brentford.

In the match, O’Reilly delivered another impressive performance, playing with composure and confidence beyond his years.

The youngster also provided an assist for Erling Haaland, helping City secure a crucial win at a key stage of the season.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola was emphatic in his praise for the teenager, suggesting there should be no debate about the award.

“O’Reilly deserves the Young Player of the Season. What a season he has had,” Guardiola said. “I don’t know who will win the overall Player of the Season, but for the young category, it has to be Nico.”

The statement has since gained wide attention, especially after being highlighted by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on social media.

O’Reilly’s emergence has been one of the bright spots in Manchester City’s campaign, with the midfielder earning praise for his versatility, maturity on the ball, and ability to step up in high-pressure games despite his young age.

As the season enters its final stretch, Guardiola’s strong endorsement is expected to boost O’Reilly’s profile in the race for individual honours.
