‘Nigerians Are Worth Fighting For’ – Journalist Soyombo Credits Public For His Release
Investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo has praised Nigerians for their role in securing his release from military detention, following his arrest and three-day detention by the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Soyombo, who was held in solitary confinement, attributed his freedom to widespread public outcry and media advocacy.
In a statement on Saturday, Soyombo said, “Nigerians are not worth fighting for? I hear that every now and then, and I’ve always disbelieved it. Yesterday, you proved me right.

“You all are the reason my detention by @HQNigerianArmy lasted ‘only’ three days. I’m a free man today because of your social media engagements with #FreeFisayoNow and the publications/broadcasts by the traditional media. And I can prove it.”
Soyombo was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, November 27, and subjected to intense interrogation by military officers.
He was held incommunicado, with no clear timeline for his release.
“After my arrest at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, I was grilled by different levels of the Army until deep into the night. I didn’t return to my cell until at least 11 p.m. on Wednesday. My case was then forwarded to a superior office that was to interrogate me on Thursday,” he said.
He described Thursday as uneventful, with no interrogation conducted, leaving him uncertain about the length of his detention.
However, on Friday morning, he was transferred to the Military Intelligence Brigade (MIB), where he learned his arrest had gained significant public attention.
“Without your pressure, I’d still be in that cell by now, away from civilisation and held incommunicado. So, yes, my freedom is your freedom. This victory exists because of you, you and you. Thank you,” Soyombo added.
The Nigerian Army claimed that Soyombo was arrested during a raid on an illegal oil bunkering site in Port Harcourt.
According to Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division, Soyombo was detained alongside other suspects as part of the operation.
Soyombo, however, denied any involvement in illegal activities, asserting that his arrest was connected to his work as an investigative journalist.
His detention sparked condemnation from civil society organisations and international media watchdogs, who described the incident as an attack on press freedom.
The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which Soyombo founded, confirmed his release on Friday evening but raised concerns about potential reprisals from security agencies.
Soyombo’s ordeal has drawn attention to the risks faced by journalists in Nigeria.
Despite the experience, he reaffirmed his commitment to holding power to account, saying, “My freedom is your freedom.”

Tinubu Gov’t Does Not Engage, Everybody Is Its Enemy — Ajaero
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of failing to meaningfully engage with organised labour, alleging that the government has remained aloof despite repeated attempts to open dialogue.
Ajaero made the remarks during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast, where he spoke about the relationship between the labour movement and the Federal Government over the past few years.
According to the NLC president, the government has not been engaging with labour and only responds when workers and other groups take steps to force its attention.

“For the past two, three years, you know, it’s not a government that is engaging. This government doesn’t engage,” Ajaero said.
He described the administration as “aloof”, stressing that meaningful engagement had been lacking between the government and organised labour.
Ajaero recalled that the NLC had, by December 17, 2025, announced plans to take its grievances to the streets after months of attempts to communicate with the President.
He said the labour movement had written to President Tinubu from June through December but received no response.
“Well, by December 17th, 2025, we pulled out that we are going to the streets. After writing a letter from May, sorry June, to December to Mr. President and there was no response,” he said.
According to him, the planned action eventually led to the intervention of some state governors, who facilitated an interface between labour and the government.
He said the intervention became necessary after other channels of communication, including the office of the Minister of Labour, had failed.
“Because the whole channel—whether through the Minister of Labour or any other office—failed, collapsed. So some governors met with us, and since that time we have talked once or twice,” Ajaero said.
However, the NLC president suggested that the situation had not significantly improved, alleging that the issues raised by labour since December had largely been left unresolved.
“And those issues… December last year to now, they’re just doing their business. Everybody is their enemy,” he added.
