The International Committee of the Red Cross has raised fresh concerns over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Nigeria’s North-East, revealing that more than two million people have been displaced by years of conflict and violence in the region.

The disclosure was made on Friday by the Head of Sub-Delegation of the ICRC in Maiduguri, Dianna Japaridze, during activities marking the 2026 World Red Cross Day in Maiduguri.

According to Japaridze, the prolonged insecurity in the North-East has continued to leave millions of residents struggling for survival, while the demand for humanitarian assistance keeps increasing.

“Over two million people are being internally displaced, and the need for humanitarian assistance has been on the increase,” she said.

She explained that the ICRC has remained actively involved in humanitarian interventions in the region since 2012, working closely with the Nigerian Red Cross Society and state authorities to support victims of conflict.

Japaridze noted that the organisation’s efforts currently cover healthcare delivery, access to clean water, livelihood support, and family reunification services in several communities across Borno State.

She stated that health facilities in 13 local government areas have received medical supplies, equipment, and training support from the organisation, while borehole rehabilitation projects have improved access to safe water for affected residents.

The ICRC official also said the organisation has continued to help families separated by conflict reconnect with loved ones, while promoting respect for International Humanitarian Law and humane treatment of people affected by violence.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s World Red Cross Day, “United in Humanity,” she described volunteers as ordinary people making extraordinary sacrifices to support vulnerable communities.

“Volunteers are not distant helpers, but our neighbours, friends, colleagues, and family members. Those we serve are human beings whose dignity and rights must always be protected,” she added.

She further commended staff and volunteers of both the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the ICRC in Borno State for their courage and dedication despite the difficult working conditions.

Highlights of the event included a road walk by members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society from the NRCS branch office in Wulari to the Musa Usman Secretariat International Conference Hall in Maiduguri.

The Federal Government has raised concerns over the continuous misuse of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official appellation by some organisations and media platforms across the country.

The warning was issued on Friday in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, through a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Yomi Odunuga.

Akume explained that the clarification became necessary after an error was spotted in the way the president was addressed in a publication by a national newspaper on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.

According to the SGF, the officially approved title of the Nigerian leader is: “His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He stressed that all government institutions, private organisations, media houses and members of the public must ensure the president’s correct title is used in every official communication and publication.

The SGF described the repeated mistakes as avoidable and embarrassing, warning that such inaccuracies undermine proper protocol and respect for the office of the president.

Akume also advised journalists and organisations to verify official information through approved government communication channels before going to press or publishing online reports.

He added that confirmations and clarifications can be obtained through the office’s verified social media handles on Facebook, Instagram and X, as well as through official email contacts.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to maintaining accuracy, professionalism and proper protocol in public communication involving the presidency.

The Council of Igbo States in Americas (CISA), a leading Igbo diaspora cultural organisation, under the new leadership of Echiemeze Chizekene Ofili, has announced the 2026 Annual Igbo Worldwide Festival of Arts and Culture, scheduled to hold from Friday, July 31 to Saturday, August 1, 2026, in Brunswick and St. Simons Island, Georgia, United States.

The festival, themed “Global Igbo Unification: Healing the Broken Circle,” will also host His Majesty, Eze Chukwuemeka Eri, Eze Ndi Igbo, Ezeora 34th and Eze Aka Ji Oyo Igbo, as Special Guest.

Ofili, who was elected President of CISA earlier in the year following the expiration of the tenure of Iru-Ugegbu Dr. Mrs. Josephine Uzoamaka Aguoji, said the event will bring together Ndi Igbo from across the Americas, Nigeria and the global diaspora, alongside African descendants, cultural institutions, community leaders, scholars, artists, youth groups and friends of Igbo heritage. “As we gather at St. Simon Island’s historic Igbo Landing on July 31 – August 1, 2026, we reaffirm a timeless truth that though our circle may have been broken by history, the spirit of the Igbo people remains unshaken; through this Festival of Arts and Culture, we come together not only to celebrate our rich heritage, but to heal, reconnect, and restore the bonds that unite us across generations and continents.,” he said.

On the significance of the 2026 festival, Ofili noted that the edition will serve as both a celebration of Igbo civilisation and a solemn call to deepen unity across generations and geographies. “The 2026 Igbo Worldwide Festival of Arts and Culture is not just another cultural gathering. It is a homecoming of memory, identity and purpose,” he said, adding that at a time when the Igbo people are spread across continents, the 2026 theme reminds us that culture is not only what we inherit; it is what we protect, renew and pass on.

The festival will feature a rich programme of Igbo cultural entertainment, traditional dance, masquerade displays, arts and crafts, language and heritage education, youth talent showcases, community networking, cultural exhibitions, reconnection activities, and engagements with Igbo royalty, scholars and cultural custodians.

The CISA describes the Igbo World Festival of Arts and Culture as one of the most prominent African Igbo cultural festivals in the diaspora, featuring dancers, masquerades, arts and crafts, learning programmes for children and adults, talent showcases, reconnection ceremonies, naming ceremonies, discussions with Igbo royalty and scholars, gala activities, networking and cultural exchange.

According to information available on the CISA website, the choice of theme is deeply connected to the historic and symbolic importance of Igbo Landing, a site in USA widely associated with ancestral memory, resistance, dignity and the enduring search for reconnection among people of African descent. The festival is expected to build on CISA’s longstanding work in strengthening cultural pride, reconnecting descendants with their heritage, and preserving the values, language and traditions of Ndi Igbo for future generations.

Ofili brings to the CISA presidency a distinguished record of professional accomplishment and community service. He holds a M.Sc in Economic Crime Management from Utica University, New York, and a B.Sc in Economics from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A seasoned audit, risk, compliance and financial crime management professional, he currently serves as Assistant Vice President of Audit at MUFG Bank Ltd. He has also served in key leadership positions across Igbo and diaspora organisations, including as Treasurer of the Igbo World Assembly, Secretary General of the Anioma World Assembly, and Secretary General of Obomkpa Progressive Union America Inc. Within CISA, he previously served as Secretary General from 2010 to 2013 and Financial Secretary from 2020 to 2025.
