The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has issued a stern warning to social media giants, including Facebook, TikTok, and X, over increasing violations of citizens’ privacy on their platforms.

The warning follows multiple reports of individuals filming unsuspecting members of the public and sharing videos without consent.

One recent incident in Lagos involved a man being publicly shamed for failing a trivial quiz, while a woman in Abuja became the target of a prank that was broadcast live on TikTok and later shared on Instagram and Facebook.

“These acts violate the rights of citizens to informational self-determination as guaranteed under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution and the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023,” the NDPC said in a statement.

The Commission emphasized that social media platforms must enforce their community guidelines and ensure evidence of consent before allowing content to go public.

NDPC warned that platforms failing to comply could face strict sanctions.

“Where a platform owner fails or neglects to act timeously in addressing harms, the Commission will not hesitate to impose appropriate sanctions under the NDP Act,” the statement read.

This is not the first time Nigeria has taken action against social media platforms.

Twitter (now X) was banned for 222 days between 2021 and 2022, after the deletion of a post by then-President Muhammadu Buhari.

Facebook and Instagram have also been under scrutiny, with Meta reportedly facing regulatory fines exceeding $290 million in May 2025.

With NDPC’s latest move, TikTok, Instagram, X, and Facebook could face renewed pressure to comply with Nigerian regulations or risk severe consequences, highlighting the growing tension between content monetization and citizen privacy.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made headlines again as he publicly tested a newly developed battle tank alongside his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, in a large-scale military exercise.

Kim reportedly expressed satisfaction, praising the “bravery and pluck” of his troops as the tanks charged forward.

The drill comes amid heightened tensions in the region, following recent missile tests by North Korea and ongoing springtime military exercises involving South Korea and the United States.

Ju Ae’s increasing presence in high-profile military events has sparked global attention.

Since her public debut in 2022 during a ballistic missile launch, she has been seen at weapons tests, live-fire exercises, and even firing a pistol herself, all while displaying a mix of luxury fashion and her father’s signature style.

South Korean intelligence has previously suggested that Ju Ae is a designated successor, making her one of the most closely watched young figures in global politics.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Lagos after a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom, where he held high-level talks aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between both nations.

The President arrived in the early hours of Friday at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport alongside the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.

He was received by top government officials, including Lagos State Deputy Governor, Femi Hamzat, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and other party stakeholders.

Shortly after his arrival, Tinubu proceeded with activities marking Eid-el-Fitr, joining Muslim faithful for prayers at the Eid ground in Dodan Barracks, Lagos.

In his Sallah message, the President called on Nigerians, particularly Muslims, to sustain the virtues of Ramadan, including piety, sacrifice, unity, and compassion.

He stressed the need for citizens to continue promoting peace and togetherness across the country.

During his visit to the UK, Tinubu met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street, where both leaders discussed key issues such as trade, economic cooperation, climate change, and security.

A major highlight of the trip was an agreement between Nigeria and the UK to refurbish two major ports in Lagos in a deal valued at £746 million, a move expected to boost economic growth and infrastructure development.

The President also attended a state banquet hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, where he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its long-standing relationship with the UK.

Describing the visit as “significant and productive,” Tinubu noted that Nigeria remains committed to building partnerships rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and sustainable development.
