Three Girls Rescued From Ghana As Plateau Police Nab Suspected Traffickers
The Plateau State Government has arrested a bar owner and her accomplice for allegedly trafficking three girls to Ghana, raising fresh alarm over human trafficking in the state.
The prime suspect, Mrs. Yakubu, who operates a bar in the Rantya community of Jos, was paraded alongside the three rescued girls at the State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission (SGEOC) headquarters.
Two of the girls, aged 18 and 19, are from Adamawa State, while one is from Plateau State.

Olivia Dazyam, Chairperson of the SGEOC, said the commission received intelligence about the trafficking and collaborated with security agencies to ensure the girls’ safe return.
“We received information about a woman who facilitated the trafficking of girls from Plateau State to Ghana. With the help of security agencies, the girls were safely repatriated to Jos,” Dazyam said.
According to the commission, the suspects allegedly lured the girls into prostitution, and one of Mrs. Yakubu’s daughters is reportedly in Ghana under similar circumstances.
Dazyam warned that traffickers often operate quietly within local communities and called for public vigilance.
“Two women were involved in this case. One also trafficked two girls from Mangu to Ghana; one managed to escape and has returned safely,” she added.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, some individuals continue to engage in trafficking. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has directed authorities to publicize such cases to deter offenders.
In an interview, Mrs. Yakubu claimed she intended to help the girls find jobs in Ghana, similar to her daughter, though she refused to disclose the nature of her daughter’s work.
The victims — Humata Ilya, Sendy Emmanuel, and Dorathy Yakubu — however, said they were deceived and forced into prostitution.
Both the suspects and the victims have been handed over to the State Police Command for further investigation as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network.
