Tinubu Deploys Delegation To Niger After Floods Kill 151, Displace Thousands
President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, responded to the recent flood disaster in Niger State by dispatching a federal government delegation to assess the damage and deliver a message of condolence and support to the affected communities.
The floods, which tore through Mokwa and its surrounding areas, have left at least 151 people dead and displaced more than 3,000 others.
According to the Niger State Government, over 260 houses, township roads, and key bridges in Mokwa and Raba were destroyed in the incident.

Leading the delegation were the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda.
They met with the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, to deliver the President’s message and oversee the federal response.
Addressing officials during the visit, Idris expressed the President’s grief and emphasized the urgency of the federal government’s intervention.
“We are here on the directive of Mr. President, Bola Tinubu, to come and see the people of Niger State particularly the Governor and officials of the state government to commiserate with you; to sympathize and empathise with you on what has happened in Mokwa Local Government Area,” said Idris.
He further stated, “Mr. President is personally saddened by this and yesterday he directed that every available resource of the Federal Government should be deployed to Mokwa and that’s why you are seeing me in the company of my brother, the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affair.”
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has already begun on-ground operations. The agency has completed an initial assessment and started delivering relief materials to displaced residents.
Coordination is ongoing between NEMA and state officials to ensure efficient distribution of aid, recovery of bodies, and provision of shelter.
The statement from the information ministry noted that the President also instructed the National Orientation Agency to step up awareness campaigns in vulnerable communities.
“This is also a call to our people to take this as a warning against future occurrences, especially all those living around the areas where this kind of disaster is prone to happen,” Idris warned.
Professor Yilwatda, in his remarks, confirmed that while NEMA handles the immediate relief phase, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons will step in to provide longer-term support to those affected.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba described the situation as one of the worst disasters the state has experienced in years.
He revealed that 503 households across three communities had been impacted, with major routes rendered impassable.
“The people of Niger State are devastated by the scale of destruction in the Mokwa floods,” he said, while thanking the federal government for its swift response.
Relief efforts are ongoing, as both federal and state authorities collaborate to provide support and begin rebuilding affected areas.

Tinubu Gov’t Does Not Engage, Everybody Is Its Enemy — Ajaero
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of failing to meaningfully engage with organised labour, alleging that the government has remained aloof despite repeated attempts to open dialogue.
Ajaero made the remarks during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast, where he spoke about the relationship between the labour movement and the Federal Government over the past few years.
According to the NLC president, the government has not been engaging with labour and only responds when workers and other groups take steps to force its attention.

“For the past two, three years, you know, it’s not a government that is engaging. This government doesn’t engage,” Ajaero said.
He described the administration as “aloof”, stressing that meaningful engagement had been lacking between the government and organised labour.
Ajaero recalled that the NLC had, by December 17, 2025, announced plans to take its grievances to the streets after months of attempts to communicate with the President.
He said the labour movement had written to President Tinubu from June through December but received no response.
“Well, by December 17th, 2025, we pulled out that we are going to the streets. After writing a letter from May, sorry June, to December to Mr. President and there was no response,” he said.
According to him, the planned action eventually led to the intervention of some state governors, who facilitated an interface between labour and the government.
He said the intervention became necessary after other channels of communication, including the office of the Minister of Labour, had failed.
“Because the whole channel—whether through the Minister of Labour or any other office—failed, collapsed. So some governors met with us, and since that time we have talked once or twice,” Ajaero said.
However, the NLC president suggested that the situation had not significantly improved, alleging that the issues raised by labour since December had largely been left unresolved.
“And those issues… December last year to now, they’re just doing their business. Everybody is their enemy,” he added.
