Published

on

The Flying Eagles are scheduled to face Italy in their second match at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup. A victory in this game would secure their passage to the knockout phase of the tournament.

After securing a 2-1 victory over debutants Dominican Republic in their opening match at the age-grade tournament, Nigeria is preparing to face Italy on Wednesday.

The Nigerian team is aware that a win in this crucial match will guarantee their progression to the round of 16 in Argentina.

On the other hand, Italy emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter against strong contenders Brazil, winning 3-2 and topping Group D.

The upcoming match between Nigeria and Italy in matchday two of the tournament marks the second encounter between these two teams at this level.

Their first meeting took place during the 1987 edition, where Italy emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Nigeria.

Nigeria has a rich history in the competition, having participated in it 13 times and emerging as champions on five occasions. In contrast, Italy’s best performance was a third-place finish in the 2017 edition.

As the match takes place at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas Stadium, Coach Ladan Bosso and his team are highly motivated to secure an early qualification to the next stage of the tournament.

Against Dominican Republic, we saw what they could do and we were able to subdue them. We missed so many chances and we need to work on those chances before the next match,” the gaffer said ahead of tomorrow’s game

Chairman NSC Secures FIFA Committee Backing for Nigeria Football Reforms

Published

Signals have emerged that the International Association Football Federation (FIFA) would back Nigeria’s plan to reform her football administration, in view of which the entire Board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi threw in the towel recently.

Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, offered this insight in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Friday after meeting with FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) officials in Switzerland.

He said the government presented its reform proposals to FIFA after the resignation created a leadership vacuum within the NFF.

“After the resignation of the entire board of the NFF and the General Secretary, naturally we have a lacuna, because there was no provision in the rulebook for situations like that, where we have nobody now to run the NFF legally within the rulebook.”

According to Dikko, the government wants to undertake a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s football structures, with the process involving consultations with stakeholders.

He said, “We told them, this is our position as a government. The government wants to undertake a comprehensive reform of the football structures in Nigeria, which is something that even FIFA knew has been on the cards for decades in Nigeria.

“So we discussed comprehensive proposals from the government, which are the issues that we think should be reformed, based on the concerns of the stakeholders, and we all agreed on that.”

Dikko said FIFA had endorsed both the resignation of the NFF board and the proposed reforms, while stressing that the process must follow the applicable rules.

“In short, FIFA endorsed the resignation, endorsed reform, agreed that the reform must happen, but it has to go through the proper process and the rulebooks, and they are ready to accommodate that,” he asserted.
