UNICROSS Students Protest Over Robbery Attacks On Female Hostels
The students at the University of Cross River (UNICROSS) have stormed the campus gate on Tuesday in protest of robberies on female hostels.
The protest, which took place at the institution’s main entrance, was in response to what the students described as ongoing armed robberies of female dorms.
The students, who blocked workers and guests from entering the building, declared they would stay there until the authorities took something to allay their concerns.
David Ekpo, one of the protesting students, claimed there were too many female hostel robberies happening at the school.
“This is not the first or second robbery incident but the third this month since we resumed and nothing has been done to improve the security situation in the school.
“Last night, another female hostel was attacked, rather than protect us, the policemen on campus prefer to chase us around campus,” he said.
A 200 level female student, who identified herself as Cynthia Olam, said the robberies, which were becoming too frequent, was having a psychological toll on the female students.
She said that, “Since the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended their strike and they came back, this is the third time they have robbed us.
“The robberies are becoming too frequent and some of us feel so insecure. If the situation does not improve, it will have a terrible impact on our studies, particularly we the girls.”
Onen Onen, the institution’s public relations officer, and vice chancellor, Prof. Austin Amgba, both declined to respond when reached for comment at the time of publication.
In 2021, a male student was stabbed to death for intervening to stop a group of criminals from attacking some girls and stealing their phones.

On Friday night, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was reportedly killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike, marking a critical escalation in the conflict.
Nasrallah, a key figure in Hezbollah’s operations and political activities, was struck during an attack on Hezbollah’s headquarters in southern Beirut.
The Israeli military used an 80-ton bomb in the assault, according to Hezbollah’s statement. It was confirmed that Nasrallah was in the building at the time, along with his daughter, both of whom were killed.
Shortly after the attack, the Israeli military posted on social media, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world,” signaling the IDF’s satisfaction with the operation.
The death of Nasrallah has sent shockwaves throughout the region, with fears mounting that the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah could spiral into a full-scale war.
The assassination of Nasrallah prompted an immediate response from Hezbollah, vowing retaliation and escalating already high tensions in Lebanon.
Iranian authorities, key backers of Hezbollah, reacted swiftly, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei calling an emergency meeting.
Reports from Iranian officials indicated that Khamenei had been moved to a secure location following the Israeli strikes.
The death of Nasrallah marks a turning point in the volatile dynamics of the Middle East, with many regional actors bracing for the potential consequences of his assassination.
