Debbie Nelson, the mother of acclaimed rapper Eminem, has died at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer.

The news was confirmed by Eminem’s representative, Dennis Dennehy, to U.S. media.

While the official cause of death has not been disclosed, Nelson was known to have been battling lung cancer.

Eminem has yet to release a public statement regarding her passing.

Nelson’s tumultuous relationship with her son was a recurring theme in his music, shaping some of his most personal and controversial tracks.

On his 2002 hit Cleanin’ Out My Closet, Eminem shared raw and accusatory lyrics about their strained dynamic, rapping about her alleged struggles with prescription drugs. The track was just one instance where their conflicts played out in the public eye.

In 1999, Nelson sued Eminem for defamation over the lyrics in his breakthrough single My Name Is, eventually settling out of court for $25,000.

Despite the legal battle, Nelson later revealed in her 2008 memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, that she was deeply hurt by her son’s portrayal of her, calling it “heartbreaking.”

The more kids you raise, the longer your period of imbalance. It would help if you had a life of your own too. It would be best if you achieved some success yourself. Don’t be just a breeder!” he added.

He concluded his message with a strong admonition, urging women to prioritise their well-being and future. “I don’t think you were born to just raise kids! Think about yourself before procreating with reckless abandon!”
