Mixed Reactions As Nigerians Make Guinness World Record Attempts
In a bid to achieve fame and gain acknowledgment, individuals in Nigeria are engaging in unique challenges to secure a place in the esteemed Guinness World Records.
After Chef Hinda Baci from Akwa Ibom State successfully shattered a world record, numerous individuals have made attempts to surpass her achievement.
One such individual was Damilola Adeparusi, also known as Chef Dammy, who embarked on her own competition without seeking permission from the Guinness World Records (GWR) beforehand.
Dammy asserted that she cooked for a duration of 120 hours, but the veracity of this claim could not be confirmed due to instances where she turned off the live video feed during the contest.
Meanwhile, in an effort to surpass Baci’s record of 93 hours and 11 minutes, another woman named Chef Deo from Ondo State disclosed that she had informed the Guinness World Records (GWR) of her intention and received the necessary approval before commencing the cooking marathon.
On Friday, Deo successfully completed the cooking challenge, managing to cook for a staggering 150 hours, surpassing the previous record.
However, the plans of some individuals in Ekiti to initiate a Kiss-a-thon were thwarted as the state government imposed a ban on the activity.
In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Tourism, the Ekiti state government strongly cautioned the group planning to host the three-day Kiss-a-thon, highlighting that such an event was not only absurd, unhealthy, and immoral but also had the potential to tarnish the image of the State.
In addition, there are reports of individuals planning to undertake a nationwide trek within a specific time frame in order to establish a new Guinness World Record.
Furthermore, a woman named Big_treshlyn has taken to Instagram to declare her participation in a contest aiming to achieve the longest live video duration.
Her goal is to be live on Instagram for 125 hours, during which she plans to engage in various activities such as cooking, matchmaking, and playing games. Her intention is to set a record for the longest Instagram live video.
As of now, Big_treshlyn has been on her live video for more than 24 hours, steadily progressing towards her goal.
Likewise, in Ibadan, a lady named Bojuri is actively participating in a competition to establish a record for the longest duration spent braiding hair.
Bojuri aims to become the fastest hairstylist to complete 50 Ghana weaving hairstyles within a span of 72 hours. At present, she has already surpassed 24 hours of continuous braiding.
These endeavors have generated various reactions from the public.
One particularly attention-grabbing event is the Kiss-a-thon, where participants aimed to break the record for the longest continuous kiss.
In the midst of numerous attempts by Nigerians to break Guinness World Records, similar to Hilda Baci’s achievement, the Guinness World Records organization issued a reminder last week.
They emphasized that anyone attempting to break a world record should have their title confirmed by the organization before making the attempt.
Furthermore, a Nigerian masseur named Joyce Ijeoma collapsed on Wednesday while undertaking a 72-hour-long massage session on different individuals in Lekki, Lagos State.
In addition to the aforementioned individuals, there are other Nigerians who have announced their intentions to break different records.
Comedian Woli Arole has disclosed his plan to initiate a marathon prayer session lasting for 5000 hours, aiming to establish a new record for the longest praying time.
Adebiyi Israel, a native of Ekiti State, shared a screenshot of an acceptance email from the Guinness World Records, unveiling his plans to break the world record for the longest duration spent watching movies.
Commenting on these recent developments, Abraham Okpe, a social analyst based in Lagos, expressed concerns that Nigerians’ pursuit of breaking records might eventually undermine the achievements of those who have set records in the past.
“Guinness may see the entire contest from Nigeria as a fraud. Nigerians are behaving like there is a cash reward attached to these records.
“There are a lot of productive things to do with your time other than seeking relevance online. People like Chef Dammy collected donations without applying to break the record, that is deceit.”
@Toweebee: “On the other hand, I’m starting to see the positives in Nigerian youths’ obsession with the WBR. It sends out a global message about Nigerians as a group of hardworking, resilient and determined people that’ll achieve the highest standards if given the right platform.”
@frankdonga: ”By the time Nigerians are done with Guiness world record, the country would have broken the record for the most attempts at breaking world records in a year.”
@therealdaddymo1: ”These poorly executed Guiness world record attempts show how many Nigerians really do no’t understand the level of preparation, dedication and hard work that happen behind the scenes to actually pull it off. It’s not by copy and paste. There is a process. It just doesn’t happen.”
@Ariel_Smitt: ”This obsession about breaking Guinness World records by Nigerians is becoming disgusting fr. We honestly don’t know when to stop. Everyone wants to break records. Until someone dies from this madness, you people won’t learn.
@Martinobanti: “The Federal Government of Nigeria should criminalise anyone trying to break any Guinness world record until 2025. The madness should attract a minimum of 2 months imprisonment.”
@IamJohnkelvin: ”Dear Nigerians, Let the Guinness World Record breathe. Don’t suffocate them.”
@DayoAshiru: ”I’m sure, the Guinness World Record will be tired of Nigerians. You want to massage for 72hrs and you collapsed after 12hrs, who will now massage you?
@LadyBaron: ”Dear Nigerians, Guinness world record is not the new ticket out of poverty. Things are hard but don’t die because of GWR. These things takes preparation.”
@_LifeOfViktor: ”My problem with Nigerians is that they believe that they can do anything with their “can-do attitude” . They don’t know the effort, training and preparation someone did to become a record holder. They thought it’s just to wake up and say let’s break Guinness world record.
