JUST IN: Tribunal Upholds Enugu State Governor’s Victory

Published

on

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu State has affirmed the victory of Governor Peter Mbah from the Peoples Democratic Party in the March 18 governorship election.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Kudirat Murayo, rejected the petitions from the Labour Party and its candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, citing their inability to substantiate their claims.

The tribunal, in its decision, emphasized that possessing a National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate is not a requisite qualification for contesting a governorship election.

Edeoga had contested the election results, alleging that Mbah had submitted a fraudulent NYSC discharge certificate and citing concerns such as over voting among his grievances.

In its Thursday judgment on the petition, the tribunal dismissed the forgery of the NYSC certificate case, asserting that the NYSC discharge certificate does not constitute a requirement for gubernatorial candidacy.

The court raised the question, “Assuming that the NYSC discharge certificate of the second Respondent as claimed by the Petitioners was forged, is the NYSC Certificate a qualification to contest for Governor in Nigeria according to the constitution? The answer is no.”
