Ex-Senate President Leads Mass Defection To APC In Ebonyi State
Former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
Anyim made the announcement at the Pa Oruta Ngele Township Stadium in Abakaliki, the state capital, during the APC Local Government election campaign’s grand finale on Saturday.
He was accompanied by several prominent figures from various political parties, including former state and National Assembly members, Edwin Nkwegu (a former Labour Party governorship candidate in the state), Senator Obinna Ọgba, and former national and state assembly candidates, along with thousands of their supporters.
The defectors were welcomed by APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum Governor Hope Uzodinma, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Minister of Works David Umahi, State APC Chairman Stanley Meghan, and other party leaders.
Minister of Works David Umahi praised Anyim for his support during the 2023 elections, stating it was fitting for him to officially join the APC.
Umahi also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his backing during Umahi’s legal challenges following his own party switch.
He stated, “President Tinubu called me to come and see him, and when I came, he carried me in his car personally to meet a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who handled our case.”
The minister acknowledged that he faced significant opposition and challenges when he decided to join the APC, but expressed gratitude that the party has now become widely popular in the state and the South-East.
Umahi highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s strong commitment to the development of the South-East and emphasized the need for the people’s support to ensure his success.
He announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road would pass through Ebonyi and mentioned ongoing work on other major roads in the region.
Umahi encouraged the two governors and other party leaders in the South-East to intensify their efforts to bring all stakeholders into the APC, ensuring the region’s prominent role in national politics.
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, in his remarks, stated that the recent Supreme Court ruling would strengthen democracy in Nigeria.
He also urged the youth to refrain from protesting against President Tinubu’s administration.
Anyim also spoke, assuring the APC National Chairman and other party leaders that Ebonyi State has always been united under one political family.
He stated that the people have decided to support the APC in recognition of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s performance and his efforts to unite all groups in the state.
Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has labeled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the most dangerous institution in Nigeria.
He made this claim in a series of posts on his X account on Saturday during the ongoing gubernatorial election in Edo State.
“The most dangerous institution in Nigeria @inecnigeria,” he wrote.

The Afrobeat singer urged Edo residents to be ready to follow their votes and the result from the polling units up until the state collation centre.
According to him, INEC will not transmit results electronically even after making promises.
“We already know that @inecnigeria will not transmit results electronically so everyone should be ready to follow the vote/result from the polling unit up until the state collation centre.
“Winning is one thing. Being declared a winner is another thing! …. From 7pm make una go Dey mount collation center !! #EdoDecide2024.”
Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has expressed his interest in the ongoing Edo State governorship election.
BIZTELLERS reports that residents turned out in large numbers on Saturday to vote in the off-cycle gubernatorial election in Edo State.
Davido has been vocal on X, calling out the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged irregularities in the election process.
His concern raised questions as to why he is so interested in the election, considering that he is not from Edo State.
Addressing the questions via his X handle, Davido explained that his late mother, Imade Veronica Adeleke was from Edo State.
He further explained that aside from his late mom being an Edo State indigene, he should be concerned as a Nigerian.
He recalled calling out INEC during the Osun State gubernatorial election when his uncle, the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, was contesting.
The singer wrote, “My mom is from Edo for those wondering why I’m interested in the election … but we as Nigerians should be concerned sha .. @inecnigeria shame on you I know how many times I had to come in here and rant before they got it right in Osun ! It’s really bad. God help us.”
Davido previously endorsed the PDP candidate, Asuen Ighodalo, for the Edo gubernatorial election through his Instagram account.
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki participated in the ongoing governorship election by casting his vote at polling unit 19, Ward 4, located at Emokpae Primary School in Benin City.
Arriving at the polling station, he was accredited and completed the voting process in under ten minutes.
Following his vote, Obaseki expressed his satisfaction with the election process and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a smooth collation of votes.
