Sokoto Monarch Dies In Kidnappers’ Custody

Published

on

The abducted District Head of Gatawa in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State, Isa Bawa, has been confirmed dead.

Almustapha Boza, the lawmaker for Sabon Birni North in the State House of Assembly, disclosed on Wednesday that a team sent to deliver the ransom demanded by the bandits discovered Bawa’s corpse.

The team returned with Bawa’s son, who had also been abducted, and reported that Bawa had already been buried by the time they arrived.

Boza confirmed that Bawa had been killed, stating, “Even those who went there to deliver the ransom couldn’t meet him alive. They only came back with his son, who was abducted with him, and we are now heading to the hospital for treatment.”

Boza had previously mentioned that a ransom of N60 million and new motorcycles were agreed upon.

However, the delivery was delayed due to the specific type of motorcycles demanded, which are associated with Boko Haram.

He said, “Yes, I can confirm to you that he is dead, they have killed him. Even those who went there to deliver the ransom couldn’t meet him alive. They only came back with his son who was abducted together with him and we are on our way to the hospital now for treatment

“We have agreed on N60 million and brand new motorcycles as ransom. What delayed the delivery was the specification of the motorcycles demanded which is popularly known as Boko Haram.

“We have gotten the motorcycles today but unfortunately, the bandits did not call the person they were communicating with. They normally call twice in a day; 8 am and 5 pm but today, they have not called throughout.”

Attempts to reach Ahmed Rufai, the Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

Prior to his death, the 74-year-old monarch had appealed to the Sokoto State Government and supporters for assistance.

In a 59-second video circulating on social media, Bawa made a heartfelt plea for his release from captivity.

Bawa was abducted along with his son, brother, and six others on the Sokoto-Sabon Birni Road.
