Fatal Twist: Ex-Boyfriend Who Set Ugandan Athlete On Fire Dies From Injuries
In a shocking turn of events, Dickson Ndiema, the prime suspect in the horrific burning of Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, has succumbed to his own burn injuries.
Ndiema’s death on Monday brings a sudden end to the high-profile case that sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.
According to authorities, Ndiema died from severe burns sustained during the same attack that claimed Cheptegei’s life.

The brutal incident occurred on September 1 in western Trans Nzoia County, Nairobi, where Ndiema allegedly doused Cheptegei in petrol and set her ablaze.
Cheptegei, a 33-year-old athlete, suffered catastrophic burns covering 80% of her body and tragically passed away on September 5 at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret City.
Ndiema also suffered burns from the attack and was admitted to the hospital for treatment, with his injuries initially considered less critical.
Reports filed by the local chief indicate that the two ex-lovers had been embroiled in a bitter dispute over a piece of land.
Cheptegei, who resided in Kenya, represented Uganda at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing 44th in the women’s marathon event.
Her tragic death marks the third instance of an elite sportswoman being killed in Kenya within the last three years.
In 2021, Agnes Tirop was found stabbed to death at her home in Iten, with her husband named as the suspect.
In 2022, Damaris Mutua, another Kenyan-born athlete, was found dead in a house in Iten, with her then-boyfriend identified as a suspect.
The disturbing trend of violence against female athletes in Kenya has sparked widespread concern and calls for increased protection and support for women in sports.
As the investigation concludes with Ndiema’s death, attention now turns to honoring Rebecca Cheptegei’s memory and ensuring that justice is served.
