. . . Claims 250, 000 Jobs Created In Last Two Years

In the bid to tackle youth employment and engagement, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has inducted 10,000 young people into the Imole Youth Corps (IYC).

This was revealed in a government statement in Osogbo on Thursday by the Spokesperson to the State Governor, Olawale Rasheed.

It was gathered that inauguration happened at a grand ceremony at the Freedom Park, Osogbo, where Gov Adeleke described the IYC as “a major highlight of his administration’s push to address youth joblessness alongside other indirect steps to engage the youth across the sectors”

To the members of the Imole youth corps clad in their uniforms, the Gov Adeleke pointed out that the programme was designed as “a transitional arrangement designed to provide opportunities for our youth” from all walks of life.

In his words, “Today’s gathering is a continuation of our efforts to provide job opportunities for our teaming youth. Ten thousand youths spread across the 332 political wards are engaged to provide services in the area of health, security, environment and education.”

He assured that “the newly enrolled Imole Youth Corps members are to be trained to deliver support services across the grassroots economy and other sectors”

Gov Adeleke charged the corps members to demonstrate strong commitment in whatever sector they are assigned, so as “to justify the confidence reposed in you by working diligently in your posted areas”.

On efforts to tackle the unemployment crisis, Gov Adeleke said, “Our administration is focused on tackling the unemployment crisis. We note the widespread joblessness among the youth.

“Our first decision is to create an enabling environment for job creation by both the government and the private sector. Part of actions taken so far by the administration is to provide financial support to small businesses through cooperative movement, statewide infrastructure upgrade and the recent launching of the agropreneur programme.

“Through small business financing, this administration has provided lifeline and operational loans to thousands of grassroots entrepreneurs. Over Four Billion Naira has so far been committed to this revolving loan scheme.

“Our government is also enforcing local content in the implementation of the state’s infrastructure projects. We engage local contractors who in turn employ local technicians, thereby imparting new skills. Additionally, local suppliers are patronized. We ensure Osun money revolves within Osun state.

“I am happy to announce that through our local content policy, financial access to businesses, and ongoing youth agropreneur programme, over 250,000 of our population were provided job opportunities. The figures are set to increase as we launch the agropreneur project in each of the 30 local government and Area Council.”

He directed the Commissioner for Youth Development, Moshood Olagunju to enforce the performance evaluation system to ensure that the goals of the programme are realized, assuring the public that “the activities of the Imole Youth Corps will be subjected to regular performance evaluation.

In his address to the IYC members, the Commissioner congratulated them and tasked them to be good ambassadors of the newly created youth engagement platform.

“I commend Mr Governor and the entire members of the State Executive Council on the successful take off of the programme. Governor Adeleke has demonstrated now and then his love and passion for youth development”, the Commissioner posited.

Thor Empowers Host Communities with 10 Cassava, Palm Oil Processing Plants

Thor Explorations Limited, through its Nigerian subsidiary, Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), has provided 10 cassava and oil palm processing plants to host communities in Osun State to boost agricultural businesses, improve local livelihoods and create economic opportunities.

The initiative, which covers Imogbara, Odo-Ijesha and Iperindo communities, combines a 50 per cent equipment subsidy with a hire-purchase arrangement to help local processors acquire modern equipment and expand their businesses.

The project comprises six oil palm processing plants and four cassava processing plants allocated to selected beneficiaries across the three communities.

Under the allocation, Iperindo received two oil palm plants and two cassava plants, while Imogbara and Odo-Ijesha each received two oil palm plants and one cassava plant.

Thor said the initiative was designed to address the challenges faced by local processors who rely on labour-intensive methods that limit production, increase processing time and reduce potential earnings.

Each oil palm processing plant comprises a vertical palm fruit debuncher and a diesel-powered automatic presser. The debunchers can process between 800 and 1,000 kilogrammes of palm fruit per hour, reducing the manual effort required to separate the fruits from their bunches.

The cassava processing plants are equipped with graters, manual pressers fitted with 32-tonne jacks and fryers for garri production.

Each grater can process up to 500 kilogrammes of cassava per hour, while the pressers remove excess water from grated cassava before further processing.

The company said the equipment would reduce strenuous manual work, improve processing efficiency and consistency, and enable beneficiaries to handle larger volumes of agricultural produce.

The subsidy and hire-purchase arrangement is also intended to make the equipment more affordable while encouraging business ownership, accountability and long-term maintenance.

Thor said agriculture remained an important source of livelihood in its host communities, adding that improved processing capacity would help local entrepreneurs build stronger businesses and participate more effectively in agricultural value chains.

Beyond the direct benefits to processors, the company expects the project to stimulate economic activities in transportation, trading and distribution, while improving product quality and creating opportunities for related local services.

The initiative forms part of Thor’s wider community investment programme implemented through SROL, which also covers women’s enterprise, education and livelihood restoration.

The company said the intervention reflected its commitment to strengthening local economies and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities in communities surrounding its Segilola Gold Mine.
