Assange Regains Freedom Following Deal With US Justice Department
Controversial Wikileaks Founder, Julian Assange has left the UK under a deal with US authorities, marking the conclusion of a protracted legal saga.
The 52-year-old Assange was charged with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, a case centered on Wikileaks’ release of classified documents related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
However, after spending five years in a British prison battling extradition to the US, Assange has been freed and is expected to admit guilt to violating US espionage laws.
It is being speculated that this agreement could pave the way for his return to Australia, his home country.
Assange was captured on video boarding a flight at London’s Stansted airport on Monday evening, and his departure was confirmed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The chartered flight VJT199 made a stop in Bangkok for refuelling, according to officials at the Thai airport.
Reports suggest Assange is en route to a sentencing hearing on the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands which is scheduled for 9am local time on Wednesday (11pm GMT on Tuesday).
Albanese noted that Assange was accompanied by Australia’s high commissioner to the UK, Stephen Smith, during his journey.
“Regardless of the views that people have about Julian Assange and his activities, the case has dragged on for too long, there is nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration and we want him brought home to Australia,” Albanese said on Tuesday.
Under the proposed deal, which awaits judicial approval, Julian Assange is likely to receive credit for the five years he has already served and may not face additional prison time.
A senior Justice Department official explained in a letter to a federal judge in the Northern Mariana Islands that Assange was being transferred to Saipan due to its proximity to his home country.
Following the sentencing hearing there, it is expected that Assange will continue on to Australia.
Wikileaks reported that Assange departed Belmarsh prison on Monday morning after spending 1,901 days there.
During his time at the prison, Assange reportedly endured solitary confinement in a small cell measuring 2×3 meters for 23 hours a day.

18 Migrants Die as Thousands Attempt to Cross From Morocco Into Spain
At least 18 migrants have died while attempting to enter Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco, following a large-scale rush by thousands of people trying to cross the border.
Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish city located on the northern coast of Africa, witnessed a surge in arrivals after migrants began making attempts to reach the territory, mainly by swimming from Morocco.

A police source told AFP on Friday that authorities were unable to determine the exact number of people who successfully crossed into Ceuta after thousands gathered during the overnight attempt.
“There was a steady stream of people all night long,” the source said, adding that although the number of arrivals reduced compared with daytime movements, migrants “continued to arrive overnight and are still arriving” on Friday morning.
Reports of migrants heading towards Ceuta began emerging on Wednesday, with most of the attempts involving crossings by sea.
Footage from Thursday showed large crowds, mostly Moroccans, moving along the breakwaters at Tarajal Beach and into nearby roads. Among those attempting the crossing were young men, as well as families with women and children.
Rachid Sbihi, head of the local workers’ association representing Civil Guard officers, said most of the 18 fatalities were caused by drowning, while others died during a stampede as migrants attempted to force their way through the breakwater fence at Tarajal Beach.
The reason behind the sudden surge in attempted crossings remains unclear.
However, Spain’s Interior Ministry estimated that about 49,000 migrants entered Ceuta within a 24-hour period as they moved by both sea and land routes from Morocco.
In response to the situation, the Spanish government announced plans to deploy the military to support the Civil Guard in maintaining security in Ceuta.
Images released after the announcement showed Spanish soldiers patrolling areas around the Spanish-Moroccan border in the enclave alongside armoured vehicles.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is also expected to visit Ceuta alongside Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to assess the situation.
Ceuta and another Spanish enclave, Melilla, have long been key entry points for migrants seeking access to Europe from Africa.

Deadly Xenophobic Violence: Ghana Evacuates 1,000 More Citizens from South Africa
The Government of Ghana has commenced the final phase of evacuating its citizens from South Africa as deadly xenophobic attacks and anti-migrant unrest continue to escalate across the country.
According to Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, about 1,000 Ghanaian migrant workers are expected to return home on special flights scheduled for Sunday and Monday. The latest evacuation follows the successful
repatriation of 926 Ghanaians in recent days.
The ministry described the latest operation as the “final phase” of Ghana’s emergency evacuation programme for its nationals living in South Africa.

The move comes amid growing violence targeting foreign nationals, with reports indicating that more than 160,000 migrants have fled South Africa over the past two months as hostility against undocumented foreigners intensified.
Among those who have returned to their home countries are citizens of Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda.
South African authorities have confirmed that at least four migrants have been killed during the unrest, although some affected countries claim the number of casualties among their citizens is higher.
The protests have been driven by vigilante groups accusing undocumented migrants of taking jobs and contributing to crime.
However, analysts argue that migrants are being unfairly blamed for South Africa’s broader economic and governance challenges, including high unemployment and poor service delivery.
Ghanaian President John Mahama has strongly condemned the attacks, calling on the African Union to place the issue of xenophobic violence on its agenda.
He also criticised the South African government, saying it has not done enough to protect foreign nationals.
In a further diplomatic response to the crisis, Ghana earlier postponed a planned visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The West African nation also joined Nigeria in urging the African Union to address what both countries described as “Afrophobia” at its next summit.
The ongoing evacuations highlight growing concerns among African governments over the safety of their citizens in South Africa as efforts continue to rescue those affected by the violence.

Ex-Porn Star Makes History, Takes Oath as Colombian Senator
Former adult film actress Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, popularly known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, has made history after being sworn in as a senator in Colombia, becoming one of the country’s most talked-about political figures.
Ortiz secured the Senate seat following her victory in Colombia’s March elections on the platform of the left-wing Historic Pact coalition, where she campaigned for greater rights and legal protections for workers in the adult entertainment industry.

According to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, the newly inaugurated lawmaker will represent the Norte de Santander region during the 2026–2030 parliamentary term after placing 23rd on the coalition’s closed electoral list.
The Historic Pact emerged as the country’s strongest political force in the election, winning 22.72 per cent of the Senate vote—more than 4.4 million ballots—to secure 25 seats, according to Colombia’s National Registry.
Before entering politics, Ortiz worked as a journalist before transitioning into the adult film industry. She has maintained that her previous career should not define her ability to serve in public office.
Responding to critics who questioned her suitability for office, Ortiz defended her candidacy in a TikTok video, saying:
“¿Por qué una mujer que estuvo en la industria para adultos no puede aspirar a un cargo de elección popular?”
The statement translates to: “Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?”
According to Infobae Colombia, Ortiz believes women who have worked in the sexual economy make meaningful contributions to the country’s economy and deserve legal recognition instead of continued stigma.
Born in the city of Cúcuta, the senator said her legislative agenda will also focus on mental health, sexual abuse prevention, and broader social welfare reforms.
Her political rise follows months of public debate after she and fellow former adult film performer Juan Carlos Florián were appointed to positions in President Gustavo Petro’s Ministry of Equality, a move that sparked widespread discussion in Colombia.
Ortiz’s swearing-in marks one of the most closely watched moments in Colombian politics in recent years, with supporters describing it as a victory for inclusion and equal opportunity, while critics continue to question her unconventional path to public office.
